Holiday sickies

Seems this time of year, the sound of sniffles is as common as the Salvation Army bells.

As a mom, you just hope your kid doesn't get a cold, flu or something worse. There are too many busy days - work, entertaining, shopping.

Teacher gifts

This weekend, as I shopped for the kids and my family, I picked up a few ideas for teacher gifts.

Many of us tend to spend $10-$20 on gifts for teacher and $5-15 on assistants/daycare staff (I'm not talking nannies or sitters, which tend to get much more). These teacher gifts aren't required, but many of us do it to show appreciation for the time they spend with our children.

Thankful today

The kids are not yet awake, so we won't get out for a quick soccer game as I hoped. I wanted to get moving before the gorge.

But looking at these angels of mine, I can't help but to think that I'm so thankful I have them - even though they sometimes drive me crazy.

Girls better than boys?

Yesterday, as my daughter got ready for school, I tried to speed up her dressing routine.

I pulled out a top she got from a friend for her birthday that reads: "Anything Boys Can Do Girls Can Do Better." It's a cute attitude shirt. Not too offensive unless you're a boy. And now that Julia's pining over one, she realizes that.

"I can't wear that," she said.

"Why not? Don't you love it?" I said smiling.

"It'll upset him," she said (referring to a boy in class who she's pleaded with me never to say his name, though I think she's told all the girls at school).

A crazy sports season

Today is the official end to the fall sports season at the Y. Both my kids played this year in a season filled with more surprises than any other. I and many other parents were incredibly disappointed in the non-profit's organization. Non-profit doesn't mean it's OK to be disorganized, screw up schedules, run out of the correct-size uniforms, decide not to return phone calls because too many parents called, etc. You still pay for the privilege of playing (and a Y shirt that fits).

"No, I don't!!!!"

Lately, my son has been listening to a lot of Hannah Montana. He's watching the show, too. He says it's because his sister likes it.

I think he has a little crush on her. She's 14; he's 10. She's the perfect older girl - and she's so cute and funny on screen.

He's in denial. "No, I don't!!!"

Singing sensations

Monday I made my regular appearance on Arizona Midday, which is put on by our sister station KPNX Channel 12. I picked karaoke because I like it and it's near Christmas, when karaoke machines become popular gifts.

I took my daughter and her two BFFs (they call themselves the Leopard Divas). We prepared for a taping, but they ended up going live. Except for one tiny glitch in the promo (which was live), all went well. The best part for them was singing Hannah Montana.

Laughing with/at SpongeBob Monday night

If your TV has spent any time on Nickelodeon this weekend, as mine has, you know Monday night is the big premiere of SpongeBob's TV movie, "Atlantis SquarePantis." The 45-minute special follows SpongeBob and friends on a trip to the lost city of Atlantis. And if you are home for the Veteran's Day holiday (the kids will be out of school), then be warned, it's a SpongeBob marathon leading up to the movie premiere.

Hannah Montana from a child's eye

I brought with me Miss Julia, age 7, to the Hannah Montana concert. I wanted to get the target demographic's point of view. Lots of screams - or should I say shrieks of joy. But I also wanted a critical look. Julia is getting good at saying what she likes and doesn't.

Aging gracefully

Lighting. It can be your friend or your enemy.

Lately, it's been very scary. That's because I have this "silver" hair - or highlight as I like to think it is - that pops up every now and then. And it's noticeable in certain light.

When I color (which I do not to hide gray but to look summery or wintery), I don't see it. But I haven't colored in a while. And now I see it - usually it's most noticeable in bathrooms. Darn white light.

I'm sure there are more, but I don't see them so they don't exist.
