Any recomendations for an affordable after school camp and/or day camp for my Tween. My 11 year old son soon to be 12 and in JR High is independent and fairly mature. It seems as if all of the camps only distinguish between teenagers and younger school age children with no regard to the special needs of the in-be-tween-ers. The boys and girls clubs group the tweens with the elementary school kids without giving them any freedom. I would love to send him to a cooking camp, but the only semi-affordable one on the east side is only for 2 1/2 hours. I don't feel comfortable leaving him at home all day during the summer plugged in to the electronics. Any suggestions? I would think that there is definitely a market for this..hint.hint.

I took my then 10-year-old
I took my then 10-year-old son (and 7-year-old daughter)to science camp for a week last year. He loved it, and so did she. Kids were grouped by age/grade - I think it was 1st & 2nd grade, 3rd & 4th and 5th & 6th grade. It was about $200 a week at the Arizona Science Center for members and I think $25 more for non-members. The class ran 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., so my kids only had to return to the office with me for a little bit.
There are some amazing-sounding camps in our database. Click here for the database.
I've not been to Mad Science, but since someone asked about it recently, I found a recent business profile and just posted it in our "Just for mom" section. Click for link.
Is there a certain price range you are seeking? I'd say most of the more specialized camps will run $150-$300 a week, with most in the low $200s.
Y camps and city programs will be closer to $125 per week.

I forgot to say Mad Science
I forgot to say Mad Science has a few camps in the EV.
Also, I recall EV Children's Theatre has some fairly reasonable acting/music classes in Mesa. That might be something different worth trying.
Good luck!

How about a city Parks and
How about a city Parks and Rec program? I don't have any kids of this age, but I have lots of friends who have sent their tweens to the City of Chandler summer program for middle schoolers (sorry, but I can't remember the name). I think it's been held at Andersen Jr. High in the past and I know they do lots of field trips in the summer. From doing other city programs in the past, I know that they're generally very reasonably priced compared to private programs. Just a thought!
