I moved here to surprise from washington to be closer to my parents after my divorce (long story). I am finding it difficult to locate a day camp for my very active young son. I would prefer it to be an active camp in play and fun with education hidden in. Everything I find of interest is located far from surprise. I am a full time single mom, I work 5 days a week and need something to keep my son safe and active during the day for the entire summer that is not going to take all day to drive to and from. Help!

My cousin enrolls her girls in summer programs done by the City (of Surprise) and I think the Boys and Girls Club or the YMCA. I forget which, I'll ask her when I see her and update this later in the week.

Many local daycare programs offer special summer packages; I know, because I worked with one after my senior year of college, and I've got to tell you, it was the best workout I'd ever had! I drove a bus to ferry kids from one activity to another, but I still had to run around with the kids and make sure they were safe and having fun.
This web site (the one we're on) probably has the most extensive directory of summer programs for kids that you're going to find: http://arizonamoms.com/justformoms/find-the-perfect-summer-camp-for-your....
If your child is going to go into at least the fourth grade, I would highly recommend popping for a week-long or two week-long session at a sleep-away camp. I can recommend YMCA (so long as your check the camp's credentials; I discovered, after working at a Y camp back east for 2/3rds of the summer, that it was not accredited), Girl/Boy Scout camps, and Episcopal youth camps, or sports camps (with some caveats; let me know if you want help there).
The staff has to pass more stringent background checks than the teachers, bus drivers, etc. your children meet during the school year. Their job is to make sure that your child has a good time and becomes stronger and more independent. S/he'll probably come home stinky and dirty and happy.
I the end, what's the measure of a child's delight? Stinky, dirty, happy, and an ice cream cone to celebrate it.
