Raising Russian babies in AZ

olyashu's picture

Hi Moms,

This posting is exclusively for Russian speaking parents or whoever might know something on this subject.

I am trying to keep my daughter's Russian language, but with too much English around it is getting harder every day. Does anybody know about Russian daycare (she is 20 months now) or playgroup?

Any information will be highly appreciated.

Thank you

Do you stay in touch with

Do you stay in touch with your adoption group? As in, the group you went over with?
Several of my friends who adopted from China (both living here in AZ and others living in PA) have kept their daughters actively involved with the other adoptive families that they traveled with. As a result, they have parties together where the parents plan events to celebrate the children's shared heritages (e.g., Chinese New Year), they take chinese dancing classes together, and just generally spend time with others in a similar situation - enabling their daughters to better appreciate their heritage.

Wouldn't there be similar things for Russian adoptions? It is not unusual to adopt from Russia (I also know of families in several states, and here in PHX who have adopted from Siberia)...so I suspect that activity is out there.

Would going back to your adoption agency be a good place to start?

Also - I would suggest going to your public library. They would have knowledge and information on groups, gatherings, stories to read, cultural events to celebrate/learn about, and perhaps even gatherings.

Have you purchased any Russian cookbooks to introduce the cultural foods of your child's heritage into your family? (there's more than vodka! :) har har)

Keeping up the language would be nice, but don't forget that there a tons of other things that you can do, over her entire lifetime, to keep her "Russian alive" for her!

Have fun!!!!
