We're still new to AZ and have never had a pool before, so I'm not sure if this is 'normal' or not!
Last week there was a terrible smell coming from our backyard. Eventually we discovered a very large DEAD CROW in the pool filter basket!!! So I'm wondering how did a dead bird get into the pool?!?!?! I've never heard of a bird drowning in a pool, there are no large windows near the pool that the bird might have flown into then 'bounced' into the pool, and I can't imagine how the bird might have died elsewhere then ended up in the pool.
Has this happened to anyone else? Are dead birds in the pool a common thing? Or is this an omen of bad things to come??? Hmmmmm....

Nope, never happened to us.
Nope, never happened to us. We've had a pool for 10 years.

A couple of lizards and a mouse once, never a bird. Maybe it was a drink of water that went bad......

It's happened to us a few times.
It's probably stray cat related. Either the bird was injured by a cat and went to the pool to escape (since birds are usually aware that cats don't swim), or it was dropped there by a cat, probably accidentally.
It's not that common, maybe once every 5yrs or so for us, and there's not really anything you can do to prevent it.
What's worse is when you're walking through the garden and you find a pair of wings, but the rest of the bird is missing. Cats got that one good.

Although a crow would take a pretty tough cat to catch, unless it was sick?
On the other hand, everything has to die somewhere. If he died flying over your pool, you got him.

Nah, whenever I find a pair
Nah, whenever I find a pair of wings only (the body part having been eaten), it's always crow wings.
But hey, maybe I do just have tough stray cats in my neighborhood.
My wolf hybrid I had back
My wolf hybrid I had back then would catch the crows IN his doghouse...
I was so tired of him burying his dog food in the ground so I decided to put it in his doghouse, figured he wouldn't be able to bury the food along with his doghouse....Instead I found lots of crow feathers all around his house and his dog food still there....I couldn't figure out why that was until my neighbor came over and commented that my wolf hybrid was the smartest thing he ever saw...I asked "why is that?"
"You see these feathers??"
"Yeah"
"He would just lay in his house, waiting for a crow to come visit him, he then invites him for lunch, and next thing I see is feathers flying out of there"
I changed his diet to raw meat since....

We havent had a random bird
We havent had a random bird drown in our pool, but my brothers cockateil (sp?) did. We have no idea how it got out of its cage and into the pool, nevertheless my brother was very upset. We also had our 15 year old dog drown in the pool. This was upsetting to me. Our dog had never fallen in the pool once, we have lived in our house since we moved here 12 years ago, and we found him in the pool. We were all very sad, although he was very old, but I didnt want him to leave us that way.

Once I was out galloping a racehorse in the desert as an exercise training, I actually witnessed a hawk slamming dead on into a saguaro....I never saw it come down since....and finally I decided to take another route to avoid looking at it every time we galloped by it....

I live in Central PHoenix, and we had a roadrunner hop over our back fence, run around, then hop back over. I have no idea where it could have been coming from or going, just a faint "beep beep" and it was gone...
Maybe birds get crazy with heat exhaustion or something??

Did the road runner actually
Did the road runner actually SAY 'beep, beep' or did it hold up a sign saying "Beep! Beep!" and was a coyote chasing it while carrying an anvil from Acme?
We have a cat so I'm wondering if Swiffer had something to do with the bird in the pool. He's not too bright and too fat and slow to be much of a hunter, but maybe something about being "out west' has brought out his 'inner lion!'

We get bunnies at the bottom of our pool, unfortunately. Lots of wildlife in our yard (TONS of quail and bunnies, coyotes and prairie dogs too).

No birds in the pool, but our cat has been known to catch them and bring them in the doggie door. More than once I have come home to a trail of feathers through the house!

We just found a dead bird in our pool filter last week. Kind of grossed me out and we shocked the pool after we found it... Anyway, I wondered how it got in there as well. Maybe the current of the pool pulled the bird into the filter and it drowned in there... I am not sure either.
