Ya know, while growing up, I always looked forward to watch the Olympic games. I still remember USA beating Russia in hockey before the collapse of USSR. That was incredible. I remember the USA Equestrian team beating the dominated Germans in Los Angeles that they actually had the Gold Medalist rider and horse at the closing ceremony to give them the gold medals - that was rare! I remember USA swim teams whipping Australian swim teams in swim meets in the last 3 summer Olympics....
And when I found out that China got this summer Olympics - my jaw dropped...
I look forward to see what China did as far as artichecture designs and so on...I also look forward to what they have done with the water and air pollutions there. However, I am not sure what to think about their human rights issues....And also how 19 Chinese police officers were killed a few days ago from a bomb set off by the Muslims (or was it them?? - I can't remember)...
Something gives me funny vibes about this one - Not a good one - I would be surprise if everyone came out ok at the end - know what I mean?
I don't know if I even want to watch it this time as my fear is next thing I see is some kind of massacre happening live....
What are your thoughts in this upcoming Olympic events????

We'll probably watch the olympics as a family, but I am less than enthused about them being held in China. As reported in the humane society's magazine, the Chinese government exterminated tens of thousands of cats in preparation for the olympic games.
Boo!
My family is sooo excited
My family is sooo excited about the Olympics. My daughter and I love all the personal stories surrounding the athletes which, in my book, makes them winners already.
There are so many lessons to learn just watching and pulling for our USA athletes. I'm already stocking up on the tissue boxes.
Me again. I just want to
Me again. I just want to add that for all of us that are not happy with the Olympic games being in China - picket, boycott, fuss at the OLYMPIC COMMITTEE who picked the location. Its time to show total support for all athletes who have trained and worked hard to follow their dreams.
We are putting all of our
We are putting all of our political views on hold and going to enjoy the Olympics.
I am really looking forward to the swimming.

Free Tibet! Jk, I originally said we were not going to watch, but we enjoy the gymnastics. And of course my other half enjoys basketball with all his favorite players.

Though I'm very distrubed by a lot of things that happen in China, I wouldn't not watch our US athletes just because of it. That being said, I probably still won't watch. I seldom (and I mean seldom!) have the chance to even watch a bit of the news on TV, let alone anything else. And to be honest, I'm more of a winter games fan.

I always loved watching the Olympics as a child and I look forward to viewing them this year as well.
I am really interested to see how the events will go off in China, and I am always hopeful that by shining the world spotlight on the country positive things will happen for the future.

We will be glued to the set
We will be glued to the set absorbing as much of the Olympic spirit as we can. My husband and I already tore out the Olympics schedule from this weekend's Arizona Republic so we don't miss a minute.
We are going to enjoy what the Olympics stands for and the hard work of the athletes to their fullest!
I look forward to watching
I look forward to watching the games and hope for the best.
On another note...On arizonamoms.com, we also should be seeing another blog soon from an Arizona mom of one of the athletes.
Her name is Julie Nichols. Her son is 19 yo Brady Ellison, who's competing with the USA Olympic Archery Team. She'll share her stories about raising an athlete, arriving in China, the Olympic experience, etc.
Her blog is under archerymom...she posted recently - read here first blog here - and should be posting more soon. :)
Arizona Moms Editor Yvette Armendariz shares stories about raising her kids and tips for busy parents in her Time-starved (goddess) Mom blog. She and her husband are raising two children, ages 8 and 11.

I think it's important that we set aside our politics to support the athletes and their families. There are other ways to show our disapproval at China's human rights policies.

Thanks and yes, I did miss this one...
No question that I am rooting for the USA teams as we all are...Don't get me wrong here...My concern is the security over there, especially heightened, after the 19 Chinese police officers killed near by the Olympic Village (I believe) by a group angered of long history of human rights issues by the Chinese government. That's what making me jittery....I hope it is an isolated incident but at the same time, if it wasn't an isolated incident, was it a 'warning'?
Does that make sense?

Yes, I heard about that
Yes, I heard about that incident, too. From all news reports it "sounds" like the government wants us to know they are well prepared to protect the crowds and the athletes. I hope that's true. With China I think it can be hard to sort out the truth from the message. It's a good question to ask of Julie, maybe she'll post about that when she gets there and sees for herself what it's like. I think it would be really stressful to be over there right now personally. Just think of what they went through just trying to get the torch safely to the opening ceremonies.
