Am Airlines charging for bags! Crazy

OK, has anyone else seen this story about how American Airlines is now charging for checked bags. I think it's outrageous. Airlines are being impacted by fuel costs like all of us, but I'd almost rather they raise tkt prices than nickel and dime me to death. Here's the story: http://www.azcentral.com/business/consumer/articles/2008/05/21/20080521b...

I saw this article too. I

I saw this article too. I think it is absurd that they are going to charge for even one bag to be checked. I forsee all kinds of problems with everyone trying to carry on their luggage. I understand that they are having trouble with the price of fuel but I agree that adding all kinds of misc. fees here and there is not the solution.

Isn't another airline

Isn't another airline charging for aisles or window seat choice too? It IS becoming a nickel and dime situation.

What's next?? Will they weigh everyone and anyone over a certain weight will have to pay extra too!

My question, will I have to

Kindahotmom's picture

My question, will I have to tip the skycap on top of the $15 "handling" charge? Those are the poor people who will suffer for this one. It's getting crazy.

I totally think this is

I totally think this is ridiculous. I over pack for every vacation I go on simply because I have kids. I would understand ticket prices increasing, or charging for a 2nd bag or more, but this is out of hand. I guess for the next few years, I will drive to my vacation destinations only :(.

And just as I start

And just as I start travelling again for work. Terrific. Now, everybody will want to bring a carry-on. I'm so looking forward to boarding.

Part of my job is i audit travel expense claims. I work for the state so there are very strick guidelines on what can and can not be reimbursed. Needless to say i was FLOODED with emails and phone calls this morning asking if this is a reimburseable expense!!
What are they going to charge for next??!!! The air you breath on the dang flight!??!!?

I feel for you. If I end

I feel for you.

If I end up having to fly American, does anyone know if that charge will be included in the original ticket fee, or if I have to pay it at the airport? The latter seems ridiculous.

"Here's your boarding pass. Your seat is 32B. If you'd actually like to take your luggage with you, that would be an additional $15".

I am assuming it will be

I am assuming it will be when you check in.

Have you seen Southwest

Have you seen Southwest Airlines commercial spoofing this? Charging for everything: need a barf bag? $2 please. Bathroom use? That will be $4 - etc...

I think folks are going to

sweetjam's picture

I think folks are going to start bringing on board all kinds of huge pieces of luggage. I don't much care. I never check my luggage because it takes almost as long in Phoenix to get your bag as the flight to get back home. I am a master packer and can be gone in a small suitcase for a week. I just think airline travel is going to change because of fuel cost. Not unlike what we are all doing to conserve gas.

I just did a round trip to

I just did a round trip to Long Beach. OMG. $2 to check a bag at the curb, and no one told me until I got to the gate that there wasn't a seat for me. The only reason I got on board was that a family of four didn't want to sit in just two seats (kids older than two on laps) when they had four tickets. The folks who did get bumped got so irate that the gate agent had to call security.

Speaking of security, plan on spending at least 35 minutes in line to clear the checkpoint at Air Harbor. Try to avoid changing your return flight; a one day delay cost me $130 on a $260 ticket. An in-flight beer will cost you $5.

I'm flying out again Sunday. I'm not looking forward to it.
