my sister, brother in law and nephew (1 year old) are visting at the end of May.
They live in FL, so they are used to heat...but not the desert heat. Does anyone have any creative ideas for me to suggest to her to do with my nephew that will be cool and fun for a 1 year old? Also, they plan to travel to the GRand Canyon and some cowboy/ghost towns on the way...any advice on places or just travel tips?

I was told about a place that rents all kinds of baby stuff, so I will hopefully have a crib for my nephew and gate for my stairs...but, i guess i need to comb some garage sales and goodwill for other things, like, toys...?

I am not sure what part of

MOMMAOFTHREE's picture

I am not sure what part of town you are in but on the west side is a park called Rio Vista and they have a water play area where the water shoots out of the ground and the kids run and play in it. There is no standing water so it is great for little toddlers. I think it is on 91st ave and Thunderbird.

What about the wildlife zoo....or as they go up north they could visit Montezumas castle and even The Out of Africa Park?

Let me know what you need as far as baby stuff goes. I am getting rid of a few things and I have friends that are doing some spring cleaning as well.
If they are going up to Williams to see the Grand Canyon, the train ride is a lot of fun. We sang songs and danced in the train and there was a surprise robbery on the way back. You board the train in the morning and it drops you off for a few hours to view the Canyon and have lunch. The train brings you back the same day. It is a nice day trip.

A great place to go for some

A great place to go for some healthy food and outdoor picnic fun is at the farm at south mountain... It can be pricy...but it's well worth it when your kids can hunt for pecans while you have a much needed adult conversation :)

We love the McCormick ranch

brookeromney's picture

We love the McCormick ranch train park. It is open at night and shouldn't be too hot once the sun has gone down. Perfect for a 1 yr. old and really inexpensive.
You could also try a free Little Gym class--the first one is always free, you just have to call and reserve a spot.

Depending on $$ I would suggest:

Tempe town lakes water park (free)

the zoo (also has a water park)
wild life zoo
usery park ( east mesa)
science center in downtown Phx
down town mesa has 2 or 3 kid friendly museums (1 has dino exhibit which all kids love!) plus the statues on the sidewalks
park in chandler and scottsdale has a train park
fishing (need ot get an adult fishing licence)
maybe a diamondacks or rattlers game
raw hide
as far as eating most buffets he will eat free!

ryzagaja's picture

a lot of the schools have pools that are available for open swims very cheaply and a lot have some smaller wading pools for littler kids, I know city of mesa and gilbert's websites list their local pools/hours/costs

If you have access to a pool, all of the visitors will be cool and happy. Most all parks are covered with shade and kids like parks. At age 1 he will not be too interested in spending time driving around in a car seat. Stick close to home to minimize driving. We have many attractions, but many are aimed towards older children.
