Parochial Attitudes

not_the_mama's picture

Not too long ago, we were visiting about how clueless we are, as a general population, about what's going on in the rest of the world. I'm disappointed in the lack of interest most of our US news organizations have taken in the recent release of the hostages in Columbia.

When I saw the tape of Ingrid Betancourt embrace her mother and her children, I literally cried. This is a woman that all girls should know about. Just a month before her kidnapping, when she was running for president in Columbia, she told an NBC reporter that she knew she was putting her life on the line. Her grace and eloquence -- in three languages, mind you -- after her ordeal amaze me. After all the humiliation and abuse, she had the tenacity to be angry about being handcuffed.

There are also three American families -- parents, brother and sisters, sons and daughters, who have just gotten the best possible news: "he's alive, and he's on his way home." Where were you 5-6 years ago? Imagine being gone since then, or having a loved one gone since then. Instead of telling us about these men and their families, the folks in Washington are busy putting a spin on who did what to achieve this miracle rescue.

I do have one question. Ms. Betancourt got off the first plane in camo -- but not much later was in a striking slack suit. How? Consider the logistics ... amazing.

Call me defeatist, but I've

Onyx_Ricsina's picture

Call me defeatist, but I've stopped caring about what the media chooses and does not choose to air. I could spend hours reading about biased news stations; I could comment at length on such things.

It's not that my own problems are any worse than what others face. It's not even that I'm bitter at how alone I was when I had to face up and dig down to fix the problems surrounding me. The experience of Ms. Betancourt would be and is an inspiration. However, I take a page from my father's Al-Anon book (one day at a time), buckle down, and face each day as it comes. If that includes working 6 days a week, riding a bike and bus to save money, cutting unnecessary bills such as cable, portioning up my day so that I get to spend quality time with my kids, but also get to shape them to be the type of adults I can be proud of while shouldering all responsibilities of a single parent, then so be it.

Some people find power in changing the world, in affecting multitudes on certain subjects. I look only to three. But then again, I'm only one and I'm different; yet, that may be on reason why.

When you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, you'll do something to change it.

Onyx_Ricsina, you're not

Onyx_Ricsina, you're not going to get any judgement from me -- only support. I just caught myself complaining (to myself) that I haven't found all the leaks in the RV, yet, and we have to walk across the lot to use the park facilities for water, showers, and bathroom tasks. Then, I thought about spending 6 years in the jungle. That clean park restroom with hot and cold water suddenly looks pretty darn good to me now.

I consider myself a news

I consider myself a news junkie so I have been hearing a little about the hostages on NPR. I was also glued to the television when they showed all of the hostages getting off the plane on CNN.

The dynamics were interesting, especially the Colombian General who made sure his photo and hers were taken as many times as possible.

She is an inspiration; I see more politics in her future.

The Colombian military

The Colombian military deserves a lot of credit too for engineering this plan, and pulling it off so effectively and with no loss of life. We have great soldiers here in the USA, but sometimes we forget that other countries also produce great heroes --- so kudos to you, Colombia! Nice work!
