Root beer keg party

musicmom's picture

Do we as parents (authority figures, too) react too quickly when we see a keg at a party. Apparently that's what one kid in Wisconsin thought, so he decided to make that keg a root beer keg. The kids had the common red cups found at beer parties. None was found with alcohol on their breath. The incident got some play on YouTube. This is the response video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vfQCE2917NE&feature=related

The story is on azcentral: http://www.azcentral.com/offbeat/articles/2008/03/28/20080328rootbeer-ke...

As a mom, I'm a little annoyed by their defiance and what seems like purposely trying to get in trouble. But I also can't help but smile because I'd probably want to do something similar if that happened to me just to show THEM (authorities) they can't make assumptions.

I am not a mom...but I was just talking to one who has thrown rootbeer float parties for her kid's birthdays. there is a guy in town who can set up and bring in a root beer keg for kids parties and I guess the kids love being able to make a real "dime store soda fountain" root beer float themselves by pulling on the draft tap and pouring the froathy root beer and popping in a scoop of ice cream. she told me it was a lot of fun for the kids and the parents liked to see something different at a party.

if you want to know more, see some info from Chris, the draft guy:

If I remember correctly, the

If I remember correctly, the authorities were asking for it. There were some pictures floating around of kids with red plastic cups in their hands. The authorities concluded that they must have been drinking beer, so they kicked the kids out of extracurricular activities.

Of course, I suspect that the kids in the pictures were drinking beer. I also think that with "zero tolerance", school authorities are getting lazy. I think that a coach should have to find the party and bust the kids personally.

Were these kids known for

Were these kids known for doing rebellious stuff like drinking beer which is against the law because they are underage? I think the lack of respect for authority and elders is so big now days, that when parents or other adults give excuse for incidents like this, it only feeds the immature mentallity of the young population to always retaliate. For instance, the 3rd grade girl who was scoulded for standing on a chair in class and so the response was to "kill the teacher" and bring in other students who had been in trouble with the teacher also. Her way of handling it was the mentality that was most likely learned at home, that if you feel you are unjustly treated that your response should be to enact vengence of the unthinkable, which would mean to "hurt the person more".

I think reacting quickly to

I think reacting quickly to a keg at a party is a good idea when under-age drinking is involved. If it WAS beer (and it is 99% of the time, I'd venture to guess) and parents let kids keep on drinking while they poured themselves a glass to figured out what it was they would be scorned for their laxidazical (sp?) attitude. It is a no win. I think it was brash for the kids to set up the adults.
