Written Profanity

When did it become acceptable to display the F*word on car windows? I am amazed that people think it is okay to display such offensive language. The first time I saw this I was pulling up to a red light and a small truck had the F*word in very large letters (almost the height of the window) and when I got closer you could see in very small letters words that the larger letters stood for, it was something to the effect of Fashionable Underground Clothing YADDA YADDA. I pulled up next to the truck, looked over and just shook my head in disgust - the driver just looked away. The second time I saw this offense was at my son's high school in the parking lot. A very nice, big, shiney truck that had a big sticker that said F* the Raiders. It was not a student's car because it was parked in the temporary spot during school hours (I pray it wasn't a teacher!).

It's displays like these that take/steal a little piece of innocence each time a kid sees it. I don't care if its legal, if its freedom of speech, ior what, it just isn't right. (The redneck in me wanted to go and scrape a few letters off but with the help of extra prayers I moved on....)

I agree. One of the things I

I agree.

One of the things I can't stand are the shirts that say all those bad things. Big ol letters of B***h or (inappropriate term) Y**. It breaks my heart because I know my girls can read now and it shows, I don't know, lack of respect for anyone else. I wish something could be done, but good old freedom of speech. I suppose there will always be those that have to push it to the limit. Just wish it wasn't within my eye sight.

Arent' there laws against

Arent' there laws against public indecency / obscenity in Arizona?

Yes, we have free speech in America, but it is NOT an unlimited right. There are laws against hate speech, making threats, slander, etc. and in many places against public display of vulgar, crude, profane and obscene language.

New to AZ --- still working out the kinks!

Unfortunately some people

Unfortunately some people find such public displays of obscenities to be funny. They must enjoy the negative attention it draws because I can not imagine why they would display something like that so publicly.
It amazes me as well how freely some people will yell out profanity at sporting events or just out in public places especially when kids are around. I can't even begin to estimate how many times I have been somewhere with one or more of my children and had someone say an obscenity or more likely a string of them. It is very rare that making eye contact with the person curbs their behavior.

Do you think people use obscenities in public more freely these days?

It's a sign of a low class

Katy1999's picture

It's a sign of a low class person who just wants to shock people.
My family and I were having a meal at a Buffalo Wild Wings a few weeks ago and a young couple with a baby was seated at the table next to us..........and the man had a shirt that said "F*ck Scottsdale"in big bold letters.......my husband and I looked at each other and laughed because we were both thinking the same thing.......how classy...........and the guy had this look like "what are you looking at"..........hey, man - if you go out in public with the F word across your chest, expect people to look at you.
Some people have the attitude that they are just words, and they should be able to say whatever they want, wherever they want............and everyone else can go straight to h***....lol

I can, sometimes, fall into

not_the_mama's picture

I can, sometimes, fall into the potty-mouth trap, but I'm pretty good at keeping it G-rated around children and in public. If we can't keep these dolts from displaying profanity, we can be very clear with our children about how we see it. For what it's worth, here's how I have explained it ...

First, profanity is bad manners. The person wearing the T-shirt may not think it's a big deal, but that T-shirt makes other people uncomfortable. No matter what's printed on a profane T-shirt, what it says is, "I not only don't care about your feelings, I think it's funny to offend you."

Second, profanity doesn't make sense. Little kids giggle at poo-poo, and everybody poops; what does manure (i.e. s***) have to do with anything? It probably wouldn't be a good idea for a guy -- no matter how big his pickup -- to express an interest in (inappropriate term) the Raiders. When you use the Lord's name in vain, you're suggesting that you're God's advisor (i.e. God da** you); I'm pretty sure He's not on board with that.

Finally, profanity is a sign of either an uneducated or a lazy mind. Even 2nd- graders can find better words to express themselves. At least those words would mean something.

So, the message to kids is that we're so proud that they don't use that kind of language, and we like that people respect them. That, and, "if I ever hear you talk like that, you'll be chewing on a bar of Ivory soap". I'm kidding about that.

I find it offsensive as

hobbymommy's picture

I find it offsensive as well. I also saw a woman driving a truck that said (inappropriate term) So and So Motors. Obviously, she wasn't happy with a car dealership, so she thought driving around like that would hurt THEM??? I thought it made her look like a nut-case! Amazing how some people look at things.

There is nothing that don't suprise me in this world. It doesn't mattter what is created or made, someone is going to buy it.
Let's be thankful for the better role models out there. This one sure isn't.

One Happy Mom in Arizona.

It is terrible. Isn't it

It is terrible. Isn't it tempting to clean it off if they aren't around? Couldn't the police cite the driver for the offensive language?
