The talk about meth

ArizonaMoms's picture

Arizona broadcasters will be airing "Crystal Darkness" on April 15 to showcase the side effects of using meth. Read more here.

As moms, we know this is a scary topic, but one that needs to be discussed. Several of us discussed the meth ads a few months back. Read that discussion here.

So will you be watching this new documentary and having the talk about meth? Have you already had the talk? When is the right age and best strategies to discourage trying meth?

Arizona Moms Editor Yvette Armendariz shares stories about raising her kids and tips for busy parents in her Time-starved (goddess) Mom blog. She and her husband are raising two children, ages 8 and 11.

I can see us watching this

I can see us watching this as a family. I'll probably talk about how the kids will see a bunch of scary images, but that these things do happen when you take drugs. My oldest is toward the end of the elementary years, so I know this is super important to discuss now especially since middle school is just around the corner.

We've talked about the meth ads before. And how we don't do drugs because it hurts their body and how they can hurt people because of how our brain is impaired on drugs.

Luckily, I can say I never have experimented with this. I think seeing people messed up kept me from wanting to try anything. I may call my parents for strategies they used on us. It apparently worked well on us.

They recently had a whole

They recently had a whole program at my son's middle school about meth. They told true stories and showed pictures - it really scared my son quite a bit (I guess that's the intention). Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this. I think informing kids is a good idea - I'm just not sure about shocking them with it. Also, my son shared everything he learned (God bless him!) with my 7 year old son. Obviously, my 7 year old is too young for this - and was quite frightened by it (I had to intervene and discuss this with him too). I also think it's interesting that my son knows more about meth than he does about sex. They haven't had any sex education yet. Are the drugs a greater threat than having sex at an early age?
