Our 1 year old sucks her thumb when she is tired. We've always thought it was cute, of course, but her poor thumb is so sore that we think that "maybe" the raw skin is waking her up briefly at night. She is a GOOD sleeper (7:30pm-7am!) but each night we hear her cry for like 5 seconds then go back to sleep at least 3-4 times during the night. I was wondering if anyone had any type of remedy that could be applied to her thumb so it is not so raw and irritated all the time. It seems to go back and forth between dry and raw :(. Any advice that has worked would help!
Thank you!

My only suggestion is to use lots and lots of lotion on unbroken skin. If it's raw you might want to consult a doctor. Just an FYI though, as cute as it is for her to do this, remember that thumb sucking and pacificers can cause teeth problems too, so to avoid those issues, you might want to ask a pediatrician for some advice how to break the habit all together instead.

My 2 1/2 yo son still is a major thumb sucker. More so now than when he was younger. It comforts him for sure...goes in time-out=sucks thumb, tired=sucks thumb, wakes up in middle of night=you hear the slurp-slurp of thumb-sucking and it soothes him back to sleep.
I asked his pediatrician at his 2yo check up about it....especially the raw skin on his thumb, and the only suggestions I got were: distract him when he's awake by making him hold items in both hands, and put a gentle lotion on it when he won't "eat it off".
Hopefully there are some new ideas out there!

My DD was a sucker when she was a baby and when she was almost two she got an infected thumb nail. It eventually fell off and it I guess was different feeling because she stopped sucking her thumb. Maybe it sad to see her thumb hurt. But I was glad it stopped her thumb sucking. I did put a bandaid and some medicine on it but she kept taking the bandaid off to suck her thumb. Good luck.

My son sucks his day and night, and it does get raw but i can't put anything on it because it's always in his mouth. but if your child only sucks at night, during the day try aquaphor and some bandaids. that stuff solves any dry skin, rash, etc issue.

Both of my kids suck their thumbs and I've used Lanisoh with great success. It's a lanolin cream that you use on cracked nipples so it's safe to be in baby's mouth. I thought I'd never use it again after breastfeeding but I use it all the time still.
