I am about to give birth and really confused on this BPH controversy. My favorite brand of bottles are the Advents and I understand they contain BPH. I thought this was only dangerous if the bottles were microwaved? I went ahead and threw out all my old bottles and nipples, but need to get replacements. Should I avoid Advents all together or just avoid microwaving? I will BF the first few months but we will try to get the baby on a bottle too, so we will need some bottles here quick.
Thanks

The Avent bottles are only
The Avent bottles are only effected if you microwave them. I have used the Avent bottles and the wide mouth Dr. Browns (I love them and my son does too...cuts down on gas). I microwaved both (before I knew about the problem.) My pediatrician told me that it's excessive use of the bottle in the microwave that causes the BPH to come through. Once I found out about the problem, I heated the water in a coffee cup and then poured it into the bottle. Also, my brother bought us a water cooler thing...like the ones from Arrowhead water or Sparklettes...anyway, it has three nozzles, one for ice cold water, and one for hot water ( not too sure what the third nozzles for, I haven't figured it out yet) but it works great. I put in three ounces of the hot water and 5 ounces of the cool water and it comes out the perfect temp. No microwaving, no BPH problems. :0)

We love the doc brown
We love the doc brown bottles too, and have a safety 1st (I think that's the brand) bottle heater that was like $15. you add like an ounce of water (it comes with a little measuring vial), drop the bottle in, and the water steams and heats the bottle in <3min. and we never had a problem with the bottles too hot or not hot enough. I love that little gadget.
You're not supposed to microwave breastmilk anyway, it's supposed to zap some of the nutrients anyway.
I'm not buying new bottles for #2, I don't believe the risk is very great. Although that is a personal opinion.
And I think the chemical is BPA, not BPH, it stands for bisphenol-A. There are some brands of plastic bottles out now that are BPA free, and there are some that are glass, but they are more expensive. Also, daycares, if you utilize daycare, usually won't accept glass bottles.
Should never microwave
Should never microwave formula or breastmilk. Honestly after my daughter was born we would use a bowl of microwaved hot water and warm the bottles that way. They also have bottle warmers that you can keep in their room so you don't have to hassle about the water. When it got hot honestly (my daughter was on formula after a while) she really didn't mind room temperature water or cold water. Good luck with that.

I was super confused about
I was super confused about the whole issue as well and had a moment of "freakout" thinking OMG i have to throw everything out and buy all new stuff!! (my daughter loves the Dr. browns) After my moment of freakout i started doing a bunch of research on the issue, and i agree with the above postes, just dont heat the bottle. BPH only comes through when heated. So heat the water first.
Thanks for the help. I will
Thanks for the help. I will continue to buy Advents. I know not to microwave breastmilk. This is mainly for when we move from BM to formula which will be when I go back to work.
I liked the Advents, but I will look at the Dr. Browns too, I've seen that name nentioned alot.
I forgot, to bottles normally come with nipples or are they seperate? If you buy the Dr. Brown bottle, do you need to buy the Dr. Brown nipple?

The Dr. Brown's bottles have
The Dr. Brown's bottles have nipples that come with the bottle when you buy them. They have a specific design, so I think that they only work in the Dr. Brown's bottles. I do want to tell you, if you are using the Avent bottles and want to try the Dr. Brown's, go with the Dr. Brown's wide mouth bottles. The nipples are designed similar to the Avent ones. I used Avent first and my friend told me about the Dr. Brown bottles. I originally bought the skinny ones with the smaller nipples. My son would not take them. When I bought the wide mouth one, he loved it. I have found that the Dr. Brown's cuts down on my son's gas and spitting up. Hope that helps you.
Oh yeah, I have only been able to find the wide mouth Dr. Brown's bottles at BabiesRus and Burlington Coat Factory in their Baby Depot Department.
