Cutting My Daughter's Hair

avianomom's picture

My daughter just turned ten months and has had a full head of hair since she was born. I have trimmed her bangs, but I really want to be able to put her hair up in pigtails, etc. so I have not touched the rest. I found some cute barrettes when she was younger, but have not been able to find smaller ones since then. I clip her hair up in the front when I can, but the hair around her ears sticks out. I was looking at her hair today (she had a bath last night) and it is really wild. This may sound silly, but this is my first child. I would cut her hair if she was a boy, but with a little girl it is tougher.

I hear ya, I felt the same

I hear ya, I felt the same way about cutting my daughters hair when she was younger. I didn't "trim" it until she was a little over 2 years old I think. I did the bangs, but as for the rest of her hair I didn't touch it. Between 1- and 3 years old it grew super fast. Of course she's 5 now and last year she wanted it short so we had it cut shorter and now she's letting it grow back out, bangs and all and it's HARD to grow bangs out!! If you are trying to have it grow out just stick it out .. it will be long before you know it!!

I am in the same exact place

I am in the same exact place you are, except my daughter is 18 months and has lots of hair. I am trying to grow my daughters hair out (bangs and all), but i was just telling my husband the other night that i have to do something with it...meaning a trim. At first he was all for the trim and now he's like just leave it alone.

But i know exactly where you are coming from...i comb my daughters hair a few times a day, but it always looks like hair is going in many different directions. (like she just rolled out of bed - LOL!) We've reached a point where we can do pig tails, but they kind of stick straight out, so we only sport this look at home. I have very small pony tail holders i found at Target to help with a few different styles - she hates her hair in her face. I too bought the mini clips when she was 5 months or so, but those didn't last long at all with all of her hair. I just picked up some berets at Target that seem to be working....i believe the brand is Goody and they aren't too big for her.

I'll be interested to see what advice you get back from others.

Suffer through it while she

susan_hampton's picture

Suffer through it while she is little! It's impossible to keep a toddler's hair neat anyway, so you'll have the bangs all grown out and her hair will be a nice, trimable length by the time she can sit still for a real hair cut. I struggled to cut bangs on my daughters very thick dark hair for years and finally gave up, we are still trying to grow it out so we can put it in ponies, and she is 5!

I gave in and cut my daughters hair a few months ago. She has really super curly hair in the back, and using conditioner didn't help at all so I cut it at the bottom, and all of it is the same length. I did her bangs too, and she has really super cute ponytails with with shorter hair too. I just cut off the bad parts that were hard to manage, and now she has soft curly hair with bangs and cute pig and ponytails. LOVE IT. Don't forget if you do happen to cut it to save the tail for the baby book. :)

OOh, I know how it hurts to

OOh, I know how it hurts to cut your little girl's hair! Have you tried any styling products - maybe a little gel? Maybe if you can get through this phase until it grows in enough it'll be much more manageable.

I haven't done anything to

Hollyanneu2's picture

I haven't done anything to both of my girls's hair yet. My 3 yr old will need a little short trim in the back of her hair. She has long beautiful straight blonde hair. And the littlest one has straight blonde hair with a little flip at the back. And she does gets wild hair do every once in a while and it didn't bother me one bit. Enjoy and take some pictures.

My friend did a cute A-line cut and they can still to pigtails. You could give that a try.

I've got two boys and cutting the hair is no big deal, but I know if I had a girl I'd hold out, let the hair grow and get those cute pigtails!

Tell me about it....
I thought that I was the only one with a daughter with wild hair. My daughter is 23 months and I think that I first cut her hair when she was 14 months and that was because there was no definition to it, she refused to wear hair ties, barettes, clips, etc. So we kept it short but now that she is growing up she is actually starting to wear her hair up, we do the lil pig tails but we too have a problem with them sticking straight out. We are able to do the one pony tail. And her hair is actually long enough on the sides and back that we are able to braid it in two on the sides. The only thing that I bother with is her bangs. At first I thought oh she is cute without bangs but gave it a shot and she looks just cute. Good luck with your daughter. I found that lil rubber bands from goody work alot better than the cloth like bands, they seem to slip off so easily.

I have four little girls all

azmommyof4's picture

I have four little girls all born with a ton of dark brown hair. Three of them have straight hair and one had gorgeous curls. I never cut their hair. People always asked me too if I was going to. I agree it is necessary for bangs once they get bigger but my little one with curls I always just pull her hair on top back with one of those tiny ponies. Suave makes a hair spray for kids you can try a little of that but for the most part she's a baby let her hair be a little wild it's so adorable!
