Teething

ckajlm's picture

So my daughter, who is six months old has started the wonderful process of teething….Freaking good time for everyone! (Yeah right!) During the day she seems to handle it fine, the occasional breakdown, but only lasts a couple of minutes. But the nights…..well let’s just put it this way, instead of one cup of coffee in the morning it’s more like three! She is just UP during the night, restless and I know it’s because she is just uncomfortable. The Tylenol doesn’t help much; she isn’t too keen on teething rings and the remedy that my mother-in-law gave me (whiskey on the gums) well I don’t really feel like explaining to CPS how my six month old got drunk! LOL So ladies, any tricks that worked for you?? I feel so bad for my little one that she is in pain!

Have you tried topical

Have you tried topical treatments, like Orajel? They make one just for babies and teething issues, and it really worked for us.

I agree, don't try the 'whisky on the gums' without at least asking your pediatrician first. It might sound like a good solution, but there are side effects and risks that never occurred to our Moms' generation!

I think my 7 month old has

phxgrocerydeals's picture

I think my 7 month old has been teething for 3 months - seriously!! And no teeth yet. Someone had posted a suggestion a few weeks ago (can't remember who it was) about freezing a wet washcloth - but only wet and freeze the top part so that your baby can hold on to the other part and their hands won't get cold. It worked for me! And, I actually thought that Children's Motrin seemed to work better for helping my baby get through the night. Good luck!

***Thanks Jacksmommy for the washcloth tip!! That was the best advice!! :)

Yay! I am so glad that the washcloth thing worked for you! Try teething pellets. I give them to my son at night and they help him relax and take the edge off of the pain. I agree with the other poster that Motrin worked better than tylenol and lasts longer. If you go the oragel route, try the nighttime version it is stronger and lasts longer! Good Luck!

I found a mesh teething

I found a mesh teething thing at Albertson's that you can put frozen fruits in for them to gum on. My DD loved it, and it really helped her break those suckers through the gums! A frozed we washcloth is also a great tool.

Definately try Oragel (though my DD HATED that more than anything, and usually made her cry worse).

I also tried these "natural" teething tablets (found at Walgreens or most grocery stores) that you put under their tongue. They helped sometimes. I think they kind of numb the mouth...not sure what they do...but they helped. Good luck! Find comfort knowing that this won't last forever!

Try Hylands Homeopathic

Try Hylands Homeopathic Teething Tablets. I remember using them with my daughter who only had mild teething problems and they seemed to work. Here's a link to them at drugstore.com although I know I was able to find them at stores that sold vitamins and other all natural products:

These are great they totally

Lavender_Sea's picture

These are great they totally work for my daughter. In fact I notice that she almost asks for them if she see's them. She knows what they can help with. There is also a liquid teething drops that are at target with pooh bear on them and they work too. If these don't work then the motrin should work. If this doesn't work I notice my daughter wakes up coughing from all of the excess drool don't be surpised if the little one gets an ear infection. Little bit of Zyrtec or Benedryl will help with this, also elevating their bed helps too. If you find that they are crying it may be a growth spurt and they may be hungry. My daughter has moments like these, in fact she had one last month and she's 18 months old. She wolk up all night and then we tried a banana finally at 3:30am and that did the trick. She was super tired after that though. Not a usual thing.

I think Motrin works much

Susie's picture

I think Motrin works much better than Tylenol. Give it an hour before bedtime to let it start working and maybe a nice soothing bath also.
I always used those topical creams as well.

My grandmother used wkiskey

not_the_mama's picture

My grandmother used wkiskey for a lot of medicinal purposes, including teething. She mixed it with honey for sore throats, and once, when I had a toothache as a teenager, she had me take about a half a shot and swish it around my mouth (and spit it back out). After that, my Mom was always a little skeptical of our "toothaches".

Maybe that's why I like my Wild Turkey on the rocks ...

Seriously, though, there are a couple of other old-time home remedies. My sister used to keep Slim Jims (the beef stick) in the fridge, and give them to her boys to gnaw on. When I was getting my wisdom teeth (and didn't have access to whiskey), I made a paste out of crushed aspirin, and that worked, too.

Motrin and a bath with

Motrin and a bath with Johnson & Johnson's Bedtime Bath (purple bottle) helped my kids alot. Also the mess teethers worked good with frozen fruit or ice. I got mine at Target.
It's not fun at all. Thank goodness our kids don't remember the pain but we sure will!
