I just signed up for YMCA Pike swimming program for my oldest daughter however I stopped short at the Water Babies swimming program for my young one. I am hearing impaired and since this program requires a parent to be in the water with the baby / toddler up to 36 mos of age, I am not sure if I am able to do this. Even though the front desk lady will be asking the aquatic director if there is a way if they could accommodate me just so I could understand the instructor. If any one of you went through the Water Babies program at YMCA, can you please let me know how that was set up and so on just so I know what it is like - from your view. I do not sign but I read lips and I cannot wear my hearing aid in the water. I just don't know if it is a busy type activity or slow or what. If busy, I wouldn't do it because I rather not hold the class up, you know.
I may just wait another year for Sky to get more comfortable with pools but she doesn't seem to be quite adventurous when it comes to water like Kelly was at her age and I think part of it is because of her "turning blue" which I am still waiting for the results to be at her doctor's office (I hope to hear about it tomorrow).
Thanks :)

I did these classes with my daughter. My suggestions: watch one of the sessions and see if you can figure it out by just watching. It is really pretty basic stuff. You "play" with your baby in the water: you let them blow bubbles, go under, kick, etc. Small groups - no more than 6 babies + parent. Then go ahead and sign up, and do as much as you can in the baby and parent class until your little one is 3 and old enough to do a class without you. My other suggestion is to take classes in the fall/winter: the pool is heated and most people DON'T take them then so you have an even smaller class size and the instructor can give you more attention. Good luck. It is so important for kids to swim.

Qmomma,
Thank you for the excellent suggestion! I will ask the aquatic director if I could come in and see how the class plays out and go from there :) I also just noticed in the program book that they offer private classes which the lady never mention to me earlier today but I will check into that in case either I couldn't do the group or if Sky becomes a difficult student and would require special attention. She is very clingy onto me in pool. Kelly, on the other hand, basically taught herself to swim with the inner tube out of nowhere last year and she is pretty strong to qualify for the Pike program herself and go from there :)
Thank you again!!!

I did these classes with my daughter when she was young and it consisted of the blowing bubbles, trying to get them used to being on their back & floating. Some singing/song involvement, i.e. the wheels on the bus go round & round, the hokey pokey bouncing them up & down in the water from one end of the pool to the other. A lot of the instruction is hands on from the instructor showing the parents how to do the exercises with the child so a lot of it is visual. I would take the suggestion above and maybe watch a class and see what you think.
