Paying for College

Hi Everyone! Rick and I just found a very informative workshop so I thought I’d share the information with you all. We have been extremely stressed about how to pay for college with Kelsie graduating this year and her sister right behind her in 2010. Last Saturday we attended free seminar at the Mustang library in N. Scottsdale and we were very impressed. Great information and no “sales pitch” at all. The web site is www.makingcollegeaffordable.com. Anyone having the same anxiety over paying for college should check it out…

What happened to having your kids pay for their own college. Your daughter can start now looking an applying for scholarships, all the info is in the counselors office and they get new infor every week, ya the kids have to write essays and stuff, but it builds integrity and self-esteem. My daughter a 1st year ASU student has so far paid for her first semester by being awarded 2 $1000. scholarships and working pt..She is more focused than her friends who's parents are either paying or they already have like 7000. in gov't loans, these kids have already changed their major at least 3 times.. and why not, parents are paying for everything and they can party. We have paid her parking 750. and she lives at home.. Yes, she could change her major, but at least it wouldnt be at a whim like her friends, who do say "well my parents are paying for everything, so what"..

" just my Opinion" LOL

It sounds like you didn't

It sounds like you didn't click on the link that was kindly posted..... it's an interesting web site and talks a lot about getting grants. You might want to check it out yourself since you have one in college.

And I don't think focus necessarily has anything to do with whether or not a kid's parents pay for college. My parents put me through college, and I was extremely focused because I was brought up to value education and was already fairly disciplined in high school. I think what you're referring to is more about how you're raised and how mature you are. The kids who blow off their classes or take forever to graduate probably should have taken some time to work in the "real world" between high school and college so they would value it more.

I agree with Desert Mom. The web site looks very interesting. They talk allot about receiving the most financial aid and they offer free workshops to parents. Heck, anything to reduce the cost of college!!!

Hi! :-) That site you posted is really interesting! There's another site that I know of that contains information that might be useful. They have a generic "Pay for College" section, but I figured I would bring to your attention two articles.

The first article is called "'Good' Debt vs. 'Bad' Debt" and can be found here: http://www.elearners.com/projectworkingmom/pfc-good-debt-vs-bad-debt.asp... (sorry the link is so long :-\ ) It gives some background information about student debt and then goes on to cover "Good Debt", "Bad Debt" and "Middle of the Road Debt."

The second article is "Financial Assistance for Single-Parent and/or Low-Income Families" and it can be found here: http://www.elearners.com/projectworkingmom/pfc-financial-assistance-for-... This article mentions some statistics about single-parent families, tips for managing a budget and being more organized, tax refund information and community resources to look into.

Enjoy and I hope that helped a bit! :-)
