Upromise program

I recently came across Upromise. I was wondering if anyone has signed up for this program and what they think about it. the website is www.upromise.com and it helps save money for college for your child, when you shop using a debit/credit card that you link to your childs account. You can also save thru registering your frys card and safeway card and other grocery stores. I was just wondering if others have done it and if it has accumulated savings.

I signed up a couple years

I signed up a couple years ago, you have nothing to lose, they keep track of your earnings, you just have to update your card numbers if they expire or you get new ones. I haven't seen a tremendous amount of earnings, however, I just don't have the time to pay attention to whether or not I'm buying "upromise" products, and sometimes those are products that are more expensive than something on sale, or than what I have a coupon for. So, it really competes with a lot of other factors. I have never bought through their website because I always find better deals online. I think to see a really big return on Upromise, you would have to commit to doing it big, and use it as your exclusive on-line purchasing point.

I agree with Susan - it's

I agree with Susan - it's great because it's free, but you really have shop a LOT to reap the benefits. I think I have less than $5 from groceries (although, I've only been a member since October).

I thought that the money you can earn from restaurants was decent - I can't remember the percentage, but we got a few bucks from eating at Buffalo Wild Wings. Good luck!

I'm signed up, I don't know what my balance is as I never check it, but I figure it's better than than not saving the money if they're offering to give it to you.

I had never heard of this.

Over the past 4 years, I

Over the past 4 years, I have made about $200 from it. NOT from linking my grocery card, there are not very many products that amount to much, but if you click on the "shopping" link, you link through them to sites like target, budget car rental, almost everything and get a little kickback percentage of what you spend with your registered credit cards (you do have to register your credit cards on the upromise site).

another GREAT site to get kickback percentages is ebates.com, you also get cash back when you refer friends and they make a purchase by linking through the site, there are TONS of online merchants here and you do NOT have to store your credit card on their site, you just have to link to the store through ebates.

I dont' know if I can post my email address on here so you could use me as a referrer at ebates.com, but if someone knows if that is ok, let me know and I will post my email so I can get the refer fee for anyone signing up!

I, too, have been a member

Upromise is wonderful for

arizona_mom's picture

Upromise is wonderful for us. I started in February and as of right now I have $17.75 in my account. Upromise offers a toolbar that you can download for free, which helps me tremendously. I do not have to remember to go through Upromise to get the rewards, as they automatically pop-up for me. I have started planning my purchases better and buying them online when I can. I use drugstore.com and combine my items for free shipping, on items I would use already. I also use the gas company they recommend and I have booked my hotel rooms through them. CVS and Bed Bath and Beyond are all stores I shop at anyway and they are also members. It is a great deal. I am using it to help pay for my student loans. What is sad, is all of the lost deals I could have had over the last five years... buying my house, selling my house, moving, buying two cars. Things you do anyway but just do it through them to get the rewards.

We have about $1,500 in our

We have about $1,500 in our account, but we got the UPromise credit card, so 1% of our purchases go into the account. We also signed up Grandparents, friends and Uncles.

I also make sure and do all my on-line shopping through them - Oriental Trading Company gives 6%, Shutterfly gives 3%, Orbitz, Land's End, etc. etc. So, it adds up!

Now, I need to tell them to put the money in an account to earn interest. A 259??? or some number like that account.

Close, lovemy4!! It's a 529

LongWayHome's picture

Close, lovemy4!! It's a 529 that you are thinking of. And just to follow up with what the others are saying, you need to move the money you are getting back from UPromise into a 529 program before you can use it tax-free for education. I have used UPromise for several years now, and it's like free money. I don't change my shopping habits at all, except for on-line, as a PP noted. I just make sure that if I want to use an on-line retailer that participates in the UPromise program, I make sure that I go through UPromise first before making the purchase, to ensure that I get the rebate. One other note to mention - research your 529's before selecting which you are going to use. And, most require a minimum balance to open the account, but after that, you can move your UPromise savings right into the account!

I don't know if any of you

ryzagaja's picture

I don't know if any of you know it, but you CAN request to get the cash out of here, you don't have to invest it. Somewhere on the website it says how to write to them and request a check (you can still keep your account open). I think maybe it is limited to once a year, so I've taken two increments of $100 out over the past 3 years.

I also tried it years ago,

I also tried it years ago, and after a couple of years earned about $10. But I was not diligent about buying their certain approved products, shopping online much, and I don't like using credit cards. I think you can get caught up in over-spending just to feel as if you are pumping up the Upromise account, so watch that.

Love it! We have been

arizonamomof2's picture

Love it! We have been signed up with Upromise for the past 6 years and have earned about $300 so far.

We linked our grocery cards and with the Diet Coke, Huggies, and other brands on the program it all adds up to a tidy sum.

I also try to shop through the Upromise site when I can. For example Red Envelope has nice gifts and they participate w/ Upromise. Same with Snapfish if you use them to develop your digital photos.

So, it all adds up and you have nothing to lose!

I have signed up a few years

soccermom's picture

I have signed up a few years ago too. The savings haven't amounted to much. I won't pay a higher price for the donation of only 3% because it doesn't make sense. After a few years, I doubt it will amount to much in the future plus you have to give out your credit card numbers. That is scary in todays world of fraud.
