Facial tics

Susie's picture

My sister's seven year old has been having slight facial tics. His pediatrician said it's nothing to worry about and will likely go away. My brother-in-law has these also and the ped. said it can run in families.
My sister is obviously worried. Has anyone else experienced this?

You know I have a friend and

You know I have a friend and we used to hang out together all the time pre-kids, but now she's moved back east and we lost touch for a long time, however I remember she always had an eye twitch, like one of her eyes would twitch involuntarily every so often, almost like she was winking. The last time I saw her which was the first time in a really long time I didn't notice it at all so I don't know if it's something that resolved itself or if I just didn't notice it ... but I think I remember her saying it's something she's had all of her life. I guess in a way it would be like a facial tick .. I'm not 100% certain, but I would think they would be classified as almost the same .. needless to say it never gave her problems ... I hope that helps a little bit ...

It is much more likely to be

It is much more likely to be a sign of either stress or being over-tired than something scary like Tourrette's. Exhaustion can often cause this - my left eye twitches sometimes when I've missed out on a good night's sleep for several days!

Are things peaceful at home?
Is the child getting plenty of rest - on a REGULAR schedule?
Is school going well?

Summer is coming soon....perhaps it'll subside with no school and sleeping in! :)

I get a tick under my left

mouse_tales's picture

I get a tick under my left eye when I'm exhausted. It's like somebody is shaking me. It started when I was about 10 and it still happens every once in a while.

The sleep advice that Happy2BMommy mentioned is very good - particularly since I know mine is aggrevated when I am tired.

Here's another thought...
Our daugther used to make a terrible face when she was working, drawing, concentrating, etc. It seemed to come out of nowhere and I was really concerned...was it a tic? Was she mimicing somebody? What?????

Turns out, I made the same exact face without ever even thinking about it and she picked it up!! And, here's the funny thing...nobody else recognized that I was the "source" for the funny face! It actually took me catching it in a mirror or a video tape (something of the like)...I just know that I saw myself making the same exact face! As soon as I realized that was going on, I had to retrain my face muscles and I eventually stopped making "the face." And, guess whoelse stopped making it after a while, too... :-)

Mouse Tales...I am totally cracking up sitting here picturing your concentration face! Great story! :)
Isn't it funny that way we impact our kids? dang - the stuff they pick up on!

Picture it as a very

Picture it as a very sqinched up nose - like you would after smelling really, really sour milk (or something far worse). It's that unattractive!

Funny thing is that I kept asking our oldest, "Do you have any idea who in her life has that face?" And, without fail, he would respond with honest bewilderment, "No, and I've been trying to figure it out!"

Bless his little heart for not realizing that I was the source! Even after I told him, it still didn't click!
