First day of kindergarten

ArizonaMoms's picture

For many kids, today marks the first day of school ever. They've become big little kids as they enter the world of kindergarten.

I have many fond memories of that first day. Honestly, I think I was more nervous than my kids. How about you?

I think my kids had it easy because they did go to daycare/preschool - they had to because I've always had a job outside our home. I know a lot of SAHMs try to ease the transition with 'mom's day out' programs.

It breaks my heart when I see some kids cry for their moms. But I think I see a lot more moms crying for their kids.

Arizona Moms Editor Yvette Armendariz shares stories about raising her kids and tips for busy parents in her Time-starved (goddess) Mom blog. She and her husband are raising two children, ages 8 and 11.

What school districts start

What school districts start this early?

I know that some of those "year round" school districts have finished their recess during summer, but I'm thinking of the "traditional" school districts - that go for 3 seasons and get the summer off.

I'm only aware of districts that start next Monday, August. 11th.

If you start so early, do you get out earlier? As in, a week or 2 BEFORE Memorial Day weekend?

My kids have been in school

My kids have been in school for two weeks already! They started July 24th. It's in the Gilbert school district. It's a "modified" year round schedule, so basically, whenever the other schools have a single week off for Fall or Spring break, my kids have two weeks off. It much easier to plan vacations in the cooler months, so we like it. Plus, they seemt o retain more of the previous year's learning, by starting up with just 6 weeks off in the summer.

I cried this morning after I

arizona_mom's picture

I cried this morning after I left my little boy in his kindergarten classroom. I was not prepared to have him sit with his class on the floor and wave goodbye to me. I thought I would get an opportunity for a hug and a kiss before I left. I had to live with a wave! He had a funny look on his face and I know he was a little confused about it all. He looked so little, yet big, at the same time! He is my first child and I was so proud of myself for not crying in front of him. We read a book about starting kindergarten and the little boy didn't want to go into his class because he was scared. My little boy said he would not be scared. He actually walked right in and never tried to get me to stay. I was so proud of him. Dad came with us today and he also had a hard time. The school put on a parent breakfast and we got to meet the principal. She had all of the new kindergarten parents stand. It was so nice to see so many other new parents in the same boat. As we left another mom said she wanted to go check on her child to see if he was okay. I told her that I was thinking the same thing but that I was heading home and beginning to adjust to daily life with just a 2 year old. He misses his brother! So do I!

Funny thing is this... I will go through this all again when he goes to college... Did I teach him enough? Will he be able to make it on his own?
