Gifted Asynchrony

shea's picture

I don't know if any of you moms out there have heard of this but it is pretty amazing the work we are doing with gifted kids here at the Learning Enrichment Center. Our main focus is gifted kids with a dual diagnosis or misdiagnosis of ADD/ADHD. There are so many kids who come to us who are gifted but the techers just see them as behavior problems and want them put on meds. Our program has a great success rate and has a money back guarantee based on neuropsych testing. If you want more information please check us out on the web. I just spend alot of time hearing from parents who are fed up and not sure where to turn.......

Shea, another thread has a

Shea, another thread has a discussion of what is gifted and is there levels of giftedness. Could you please explain the threshhold first for gifted and then other levels (I've heard the term "highly" gifted) as your organization defines it. Also, are gifted/highly gifted more likely to have behavioral problems than the general public or those with learning difficulties, from your experience??

There is a friendly discussion going on, but sounds like you can give some professional insight. Thank you.

Most people consider gifted

Most people consider gifted as someone with a 130 IQ but there is alot of other things to take into consideration than just the IQ score and if they have other issues going on like ADD/ADHD they might not score as high just because of the attention factor but they are truly gifted. The only real way to tell is through testing. There are different levels of giftedness like twice gifted might be someone who is gifted intelligence and also gifted in a musical area. I would say yes that gifted / highly gifted children are more likely to have behavior problems but how much of that is due to their minds not being stimulated or they are just bored? Plus you have to understand that a gifted child might read, write, or do math at a high level but their maturity doesn't necessarily match so as parents and teachers we tend to expect them to act more mature than they are really capable of. Not only that sometimes the are gifted exteremly in one area and lacking in another. I know a 4yr old who reads at a 3rd grade level but canot write at all and has trouble with speech at times. There are so many factors that can fall into this. If you have a gifted child I recommend reading "Misdiagnosis & Dual Diagnosis of Gifted Children and adults" It is fascinating to read as it was written by a group of doctorsthat specialize in gifted kids..

I think that what's

MollyDonnelly's picture

I think that what's confusing people is that the definition of gifted seems to have broadened over the years. I am 45 years old and when I was in high school there were no gifted programs. There were really smart kids, one out of 250 got to enter Johns Hopkins as a sophomore pre-med student because he passed all his AP tests. The really smart kids, about 30 of them, filled out the honors classes. The rest of us were just regular joes.

Today, my sons are considered gifted because they scored in the 97th percentile in one or more subject. There are 130 gifted kids in my one son's classes alone. Are they truly gifted? They are smart kids, for sure, but are they truly gifted? Or has the definition of gifted changed over the years?

I have a friend who went to UC Berkeley to study nuclear physics. He's a rocket scientist...literally! He also was a big pain in the neck growing up, winning arguments with his parents by the time he was three and causing a whole lot of trouble thoughout childhood. He was truly gifted in every sense of the word. My kids are not that.

Maybe you can help me/us with this. I think our differences stem from how we define gifted.
