Is Homeschooling for you?

MiriamVS's picture

As a parent who has in the past homeschooled my kids, I am frequently asked my opinions about homeschool: does it work? Is it hard to do? How will it affect the kids' socialization skills?

And what I tell curious parents is that ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL! In other words, there is no hard and fast answer to whether or not homeschooling 'works,' it's all about what works for each particular child in each unique circumstance. So before looking into various homeschool programs, spend some time evaluating your child / children.

Do they learn better by reading about subjects, or by experimenting firsthand? Are they more likely to pay attention if they are with other children, or will that make them more distracted? When you (remember --- you will be their primary teacher) try to explain a complex idea, do they perk up and ask questions, or resist your efforts and become frustrated? Do YOU become frustrated and angry if you can't get your point across or if they seem disinterested in what you're saying?

All of these issues --- and many others --- should be factored into your decision. If your children are currently in school, their teachers can offer invaluabe (and objective) advice on their learning styles, strengths and weaknesses, and overall attitudes and abilities. The school system also has personnel who can help make evaluations and recommendations for pre-schoolers --- at no cost.

If you do decide to homeschool, remember that even the best program will require modifications to meet your child's needs. And if you're homeschooling several children, what works for one will not necessarily work for another. You must be willing to adapt and to constantly re-evaluate. And above all, you have to be patient. Homeschooling is a huge undertaking for parent and child alike --- but with the right understanding, commitment and dedication, it can be a wonderful and beneficial experience for the entire family.

I have never homeschooled

I have never homeschooled before, but I have been considering it.

Do the kids really pay attention when home and your trying to teach them?

It really depends on the

It really depends on the kid. My oldest did very well, not so much the other 2!

The most important thing is to set up a routine and stick to it. It's just like going to regular school --- some days are better than others, but if they know what to expect it helps immensely.

There are also home schooling groups that get together so the kids can spend time in activities together. That is also a help in keeping them on track.
