Autism clash

musicmom's picture

Schools have such an influence on how our kids learn. As a mom who has been in the principals office plenty given my child's learning disabilities, I know how administrators have tons of power on what services and treatment our kids get.

I found this story in Gilbert very interesting. Link:http://www.azcentral.com/community/gilbert/articles/0326gr-gpsschools0326-ON.html

I know many people with autistic kids and they are constantly fighting for their kids rights at school. What are your experiences? I know if I'm not a pain, I get ignored.

I have been extremely lucky with my daughter. The first school I had her in took about 2 and 1/2 hatred months to get her in a "special" class. It was an isolated room that top off at I believe 14 kids. We moved during her 1st grade year (she finished off the school year there) and again putting her in a different school proved to be a small challenge, but once she was there, it was fine. Luckilly for me PVUSD and DVUSD have proved to be wonderful. My husband and I have talked about moving once again, but I'm extremely hesitant because of the luck I have had so far. I just don't want to jinx my support.

I hope that your later experience proves better. I agree, it can be challenging in the beginning. Hopefully you feel as I do that at the end of the day, you child's teachers, aides, support staff and all else involved have the child's interest best at heart.

Because I couldn't find a decent public school out here in our district (Florence) I kept my son out for his kindergarten year. I'm now fighting the state for a grant for him to go to a special needs school. They are trying to deny me because I kept my son out of kindergarten this last year. Okay.. so what am I supposed to do when the public school they want to try to force my son into has a history of abuse and sexual misconduct?????
