getting teen son to read

DesertMom's picture

I never have trouble finding great fiction books and series of books for my tween daughter, but for some reason I have the hardest time finding them for my 13-year-old son (8th grader). It's a difficult age, anyway, because some of the subject matter/themes of teen fiction he's just not ready for. He's not into sci-fi, so that really limits the selections.

Anyone have any ideas? A series of books is the best because once he's hooked on the first one, he'll enthusiastically read the entire series.

Has he read the Harry Potter books? If so - try the Eragon series.

sure, fine, whatever

Yeah, he read the Harry

Yeah, he read the Harry Potter series like 3 or 4 years ago. Eragon about 2 years ago. He's at a touch age because he's not ready for a lot of the high school fiction (that include sex), but he's beyond the kinds of books you suggested. It's really frustrating when we're at the bookstore or library because we can find dozens of books for his younger sisters.

Historical fiction or

Historical fiction or autobiographies are great areas for him to look into. We know many kids who prefer these type of books. If he is more hands on, how about books on how things are made? Have him pick out an area of the world he would like to learn more about like StoneHedge, Rome, or Africa.
