Prom Dresses

phoenixgrlkim1's picture

Is it just me or are there other parents out there that feel that prom dresses are a little too little now a days? My DH and I have 4 girls and the last two years have cringed when we have gone out at the same time as prom and seen these dresses on little girls. The cutouts, low cuts in the front, side slits and shortness of them all make me think "how can these teen's parents be ok with that??" Am I just being old fashion? I'm only 30 too so it's not like I'm a old I just think that they are completely innapproriate for a 15-17 year old high school studen to wear.

i agree with you completely!! Growing up my parents would have never purchased a dress like that for me. Not that i would have worn a prom dress like that, but I knew better then to even ask.

Seems like kids are growing up way to fast these days. I am still waiting for the low-rise jeans to go out of style......i hate seeing the the toosh cleavage!! No matter what your age is!!

There's hope! I just spent hours prom-dress shopping with moms and daughters for a story, and I was impressed that both mothers and daughters were cautious about not picking a dress that would be too revealing. You can read it on arizonamoms.com under "Just for moms" on the right hand side of the home page. Click on the slideshow and you'll see that they did find some lovely dresses.

And, no, you're not being old-fashioned. They are only girls for a short time; there's no reason to rush them.

I totally agree. I keep wondering, do parents actually hope their child has sex on prom night, because a lot of what they wear looks like lingrie. I think now days they idolize movie stars so much that they want to be just like them.

I found a really cute modest prom dress website: http://www.latterdaybride.com/modest_bridesmaid_prom.php?pg=1&style=24
The stuff was really young and stylish.

I realize that kids aren't as conservative as they were when I was that age - 20 plus years ago - but what I see now being advertised as a prom dress looks like an adult cocktail dress. I'm just glad I have two boys!

That's nothing. I shot a prom (I'm a photographer) last weekend and the girls all had tattoos on their chests, ankles etc. I wanted to photoshop the tattoos out of the pics, but I didn't. lol But their dresses were tame.

I agree - many dresses are scary! But have you seen how kids dance these days? Wow - is all I can say. Now the trend too is to have after parties at hotels where a group of kids rent a hotel room for the night.....Yikes!
