Stop Kissing Me!

mouse_tales's picture

My only bio-son is almost 5. The last couple of days, he has said that I am only allowed to kiss him once and that's it. "Just one at a time, Mommy." (My kisses are usually on his cheeks, and come in 3s.)

I thought he was just kidding (because he has a funny sense of humor) except he's been saying it a lot these past few days. I remember my neighbor telling me that her son went through a stage when her youngest asked her to stop kissing him - and I am thinking it was around this age.

He still has pudgy little boy cheeks...is this a sign of him growing up and/or exerting his independence?

Moms of sons...what was your experience???

I admit that I probably kiss him a lot because we were a very kissy/affectionate family growing up. I also went through a number of failed pregnancies before he was born so I know I am extra-attached because of it. My step-son was a little older than our son now when we married so I don't have a good frame of reference.

My son did that when he was about your sons age. But a few years later, he didn't care anymore. Now he's 23 and I don't care! If it embarreses him for me to kiss him, too bad!!!
Seriously though, I think your son is very normal. It's just him trying to tell you to "let go a little".

**sigh** she says as her heart breaks just a little...:-) I thought that might be the case...

It's so hard, isn't it?! I

It's so hard, isn't it?! I have a teenage son who also did the same thing (can't remember eactly what age), so I imagine your son is right on track. Don't worry, he'll still have his moments when he needs to be smothered in hugs and kisses.

Yeah, and then his dad came

Yeah, and then his dad came home that same night and gave him all kinds of kisses and hugs and he ate it up! I wonder if he gets "bored" with me sometimes!

My oldest is 13 (step son) and has been doing the whole "my parents are aliens" whenever we are in public. He'd stop breathing if I grabbed him and did the same!!!

There's just something about a little kid's cheeks...you know, when they are still extra round and soft?

My son is 12 and I remember

My son is 12 and I remember last year one day I took him to school and hugged him and he totally freaked out. It really hurts your feelings. At home is another thing...my son STILL hugs and kisses me good night. I'm sorry and yes, it's a little sad that they grow up so fast...
