I want/need to get CPR certified and would like to know if anybody could point me in the right direction. I have no idea where to look. I live in the west valley. Any classes near Vistancia or Arrowhead area would be ideal.

Look into the hospitas in your area, they usually have classes for a small fee.
Also, the American Red Corss does classes. If you click on this link and put your zip code in it will give you contct info. Good Luck!

I just took a great class at

Optimist's picture

I just took a great class at Gateway community college. The cost was $60 and it was 8 hrs long. It was for entry level, but for health care workers, so it was very thorough. I've taked CPR classes before, but always walked away hoping that no one ever dropped down in front of me, becasue I still felt intimidated after the training. This tme, I found myself hoping to be able to use it! LOL. It was weird, but I feel really confident now. We even got to use an AED and it was great to see exactly how easy they are to use. My certification is goodf for two years.

Our family went though the

Our family went though the American Red Cross. We did the whole first aid, adult and infant/child CPR.

The great thing is that now,

Optimist's picture

The great thing is that now, the guidelines have changed. They recommend a 30:2 (compressions to breaths) ratio for ALL (infant, child and adult), to help people remember. Studies showed that people were "confused" in an emergency and resisted helping, because they couldn't remember if they were doing it right.

Now, of course, they say for health care workers, to do 15:2 for infants, if they can, because a health care worker is more likely to have the confidence to dive in. BUT, 30:2 works and should be done.

They are also recommending that people not even bother checking the pulse and only check breathing. They found that even 40% of nurses, mistakenly thought that they felt a pulse because their own heart was pounding so hard. Consequently, they didn't start CPR when it was needed. They said that IF someone is NOT breathing, then they won't have a pulse for long, so start compressions. They said that the compressions won't hurt iin this case and will probably help.

They also said that when using an AED, the most effective shock was the SECOND, not the first and the second most effective shock was the FOURTH, so never assume that the shock didn't work. Continuing compressions while the AED is analyzing, sort of "primes" the heart to take the shock better.

It's all amzing that this simple technique can save a life. EVERYONE should be certified!
