My kids used to love reading Eric Carle books: "The Very Hungry Catepillar," "A House for Hermit Crab," "The Tiny Seed," etc. They are cute stories, beautifully illustrated - they make me think of kid paintings.
Now you can get four of Carle's hardcover books for cheap at Kohl's. For $5, to be exact. Typically you'll see these for $8-$17 at book stores. They are:
"Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?"
"Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?"
"Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?"
"Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?"
Just so you know, these were written by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated by Carle.
The profits of the books go towards children's health and education initiatives nationally.
I received a set of these books, and will give it away to one lucky arizonamoms.com registered user. Just share your favorite childhood book and why you loved it so much.
I'll draw at random from this post.

There are a couple that I love. I loved The Rainbow Fish. I remember sitting on the reading carpet in school and having our teacher read it to us. I loved the colors in it. I also loved Corduroy. I remember going to the library and reading it everytime I was there. My other fav's were If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Curious George! That monkey
Curious George! That monkey was so naughty (and I was so angelic) that I lived vicariously through him!

Thanks for the info about the books at Kohl's. My son is really enjoying us reading to him and his favorite book is Brown Bear Brown Bear What do you See?
My favorite books as a kid were the Little Bear series by Else Holmelund Minarik and Maurice Sendak. I think I related to Little Bear and loved his many adventures. My mom told me that these were the books I learned to read with. That may be why they were a favorite of mine. Our kids watch Little Bear on Noggin and love it too.

I too, can read There's a Wocket in My Pocket without looking at the words... it was my son's favorite when he was younger!
When I was younger the Little Bear books were one of my favorites. They are some of the first books I remember reading on my own.

My daughter memorized "Are you My Mother" at 4. Except she said: "Are you my mudder?" So cute. :-)

Thanks for the heads up - I love those books...I'll have to get the ones we don't have.
My favorite when I was younger was the collection of poems by Shel Silverstein called A light in the Attic.
I also liked Where the Wild Things Are and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
The books that most loved to
The books that most loved to read when I was small were the Dick and Jane books. They were actually my moms old books that she had saved. She would read these books to me everynight and I was so excited when I could finally read them by myself. I now read to my kids everynight and hope they will have the same fond memories as I do.
For babies, nothing beats
For babies, nothing beats Sandra Boyton books. My whole family still says, "oh my oh my oh dinosaurs" as an expression of surpise or frustration! I get teary eyed just thinking about "Moo Ba La La La"! ..."The Going To Bed Book"..."Birthday Monsters"..."Blue Hat, Green Hat"(boy, did that make my toddlers giggle!)...ahh the memories! My younger sister was reading "A to Z" to my 18 month old son, the night before she went back to college and when she got to "L...Lion Leaving", and she burst into tears! Some of my best memories with my babies are rocking them to sleep, reading or reciting those books. Since they were so easy to memorize, I could calm my fussy babies while driving by launching into...."A cow says, Moo...A sheep says Baa....Three singing pigs say La La La!". In fact, to this day I get the worst baby pangs and feel the most sorry for myself over my miscarriage, when I see those books in the store! But, those fun rhymes also make me and my whole family laugh!

I loved the Amelia Bedelia
I loved the Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish. She was funny and so did some really funny things, like cutting up dates from the calendar to make a date cake:)

When I was little my mom
When I was little my mom started reading "I'll love you forever" to me. I got to pick a story for her to read me every night before bed and that's the one I always picked. I haven't read the book in probably 15 years but I still have it memorized. Now that I'm getting married and my fiance's four year old is living with us 90% of the time I recite that book to her sometimes. I should go out and buy the book so she can look at the pictures but she loves hearing it so much, I'm not sure it will be the same if she has the book. . .
My all time favorites are

I love The Very Hungry
I love The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In fact my daughter has me read it to her almost everyday. She likes sticking her fingers in the holes of the foods when I'm reading it to her, and at the end where the butterfly is I make the book fly as if it were a butterfly, and she loves that.
I think my all time favorite books were by Shel Silverstein. My dad used to read me either a couple of poems out of Where the Sidewalk Ends, or The Giving Tree. Where the Sidewalk Ends had a lot of good poems, and gave my dad and I a laugh when he used to read it to me before bed. The Giving Tree I think really taught me about being giving, and compassionate towards others when I was younger.
I think it's amazing how influencial books can be to children.

I think we know Greens Eggs
I think we know Greens Eggs and Ham by heart in our household. Right now my son and daughter love reading Curious George books. My husband reads each child a classic fairy tale each night. We read a lot before bedtime!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar! All four of my kids loved this book and I have wonderful memories of reading it to them every night before they went to sleep. There was a time I knew every word in that book!

Mine are sort of unusual -
Mine are sort of unusual - there was a book called "The Story of Holly and Ivy", I can't remember the author. It was a Christmas book about a little girl who looked at a doll in a toy store and wished it was hers - I think she was an orphan (haven't read the book in years - sorry!). The doll also wished that she had a little girl to love her. I think a lonely couple ended up adopting the girl and getting the doll. I just remember pulling this book out every Christmas, and I'm going to start reading it to my baby girl this Christmas.
I also enjoyed "Babar the Elephant" books immensely. I didn't really have a favorite one, I loved all of them!
