Need a Recommendation

Hi all,

I really need a good book recommendation. I love to read and have been through many of the best sellers. I am open to almost all areas. I normally have no problem finding books however I just finished reading Water for Elephants and it has really got my stuck. I loved the book so much I want to find another book like it so nothing else seems to catch my attention. I was looking for another book by the author or in the same area but I cannot find one. This is by far my favorite book of all time! Did anyone else read it? Some of my other favorites are:

Memoirs of a Geshia (MUCH better than the movie)
Harry Potter Book 7 (Yes, you need to read all of them)
Collapse, How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed (Some dry parts but very interesting overall)
Confessions of Shopaholic or anything by Kinsella (Great, light hearted funny reading), Always looking for recommendations in this catergory as they are great for listening to on your IPod while running or cleaning)
Kite Runner
Wicked (A little out there but a great idea)
Anything by Dan Brown (I likes Deception Point the Best)
If Life Is a Bowl of Cherries Why Am I In the Pits? (Really old but funny and still reveleant)
The Once and Future King
The Killer Angels, Accounts of Pearl Harbor (Any historic based book)

As you can see I like a lot of books but I really need to find a good one to get me hooked. As anyone read God Is Not Great? I heard that was really interesting. Not sure though.
Thanks for any ideas.

Hello Janet I have read

Yumamommy's picture

Hello Janet
I have read The time traveler's wife and thought it was good. I also liked The Nanny Diaries, also better than the movie. My friend and I are both fans of the Harry Potter books and have read them all, she has also read The Spiderwick Chronicles and enjoyed them, although she said they read fast. I have read all 13 Alex Cross thrillers by James Patterson. They started with Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, which were both Movies, and again, the books were better. I have also read a book called The Honeymoon, which started me on the Patterson Kick, also good.
I am looking forward to reading Water for Elephants, I have heard good things about it. Oh, another book my friend told me about is called " The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time", it's another one of those on my list. Currently I am trying the classic Madame Bovary. It is not an easy read like the Patterson books, however I talk myself into continuing to read it, telling myself it must be a classic for some reason, it will pay off in the end.
I hope this helps, and I hope you find some excellent reading! Good luck to you.

I read Lolita by Nabrokov

lovemy4's picture

I read Lolita by Nabrokov (sp?) and was surprised that it wasn't a romance at all, after reading it I am confused why the Buttafuco story would refer to Lolita. Lolita is a victim in the book.

I've enjoyed reading books in the series from "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency." Although I hear the Books on tape for this series are really great too.

I didn't read the Kite Runner, but read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" and enjoyed that.

I just started "A year of Living Biblically" by AJ Jacobs, about a jew "A jew like the Olive Garden is an Italian Restaurant" who tries to follow the Bible to the letter for a year. I just started but laughed out loud a couple of times during the intro.

Happy Reading.

Many of those on your list

Many of those on your list I've read before (one or two more than once) and have thoroughly enjoyed. My personal favorite series is by Melanie Rawn, beginning with Dragon Prince. Character development is great and before long you really start feeling a world of empathy for those you're reading about. In total, I've read the first book over 20 times and the entire series upwards of 6 or 7.

When you're sick and tired of being sick and tired, you'll do something to change it.

I just finished reading "

I just finished reading " The only girl in the car" it's a memoir by Kathy Dobie.I couldn't put it down.
The one before that was " The glass Castle" by Jeannette Wall..that is also a memoir.I read that book in two days....I suffered not getting all my hours off sleep....I really enjoyed that one.

I've always got a novel

I've always got a novel going, sometimes two simultaneously, and lately I've been really into Chris Bohjalian. I heard his book, "Double Bind" on tape (my commute to work is over an hour one-way) recently and it really freaked me out. He incorporated "The Great Gatsby" within the plot in an extremely clever way.

I also liked his books: "Midwives" and "Trans-sister Radio." His latest book is "Skeletons at the Feast," that I've just bought but haven't started yet. Can't wait to though.

You've got a great list,

You've got a great list, many of those are my favorites too.

If you liked "Kite Runner", I think you will like "A Thousand Splendid Suns". I think it is better than the "Kite Runner".

I also just finished "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett and talk about loosing sleep! It is very long, but worth it.

For light reading, I really loved "The Secret History of the Pink Carnation"by Lauren Willig. It is a little historical fiction, a little romance, and alot of fun.

One of my favorites is Janet

One of my favorites is Janet Evanovich. She has a series about a bountyhunter in NJ named Stephanie Plum. Book #14 just came out and I can't wait to get it. She also has other books, not just the series. All of her books are fun, easy reads.

Yes, I have 3 boys. No, I am not trying for a girl.

I just finished 'Buddah' by

I just finished 'Buddah' by Deeppak Chopra....very, very good if you are intersted in that topic. I also am almost finished reading 'A New Earth' by Eckhart Tolle, also very, very good and I highly recommend it if you are interested in philosphy and expanded consciousness. This was an 'Oprah' book and she did extensive interviews with the author recently, but I would have read it anyway. He also wrote the Power of Now several years back and that is awesome. Lastly, I just picked 'The Appeal' by John Grisham today. This is starting out very good and of course he is an iconic fiction writer. I would recommend this if you're looking for fiction.

I am reading The Secret

Sandi's picture

I am reading The Secret right now. I didn't realize it was so controversial until I brought it up to some girlfriends. It was recommended to me. It is a type of book to get you thinking more positive, which I could use right now.

I haven't read The Secret

Ms.M's picture

I haven't read The Secret but did watch the video that my neighbor loaned me. Awesome, powerful concepts. They "work" whether you "believe" in them or not. It's like gravity. It's there whether you "believe" in it or not, as they say. Another related very good book on the topic is "The Law of Attraction" by Michael Losier.
Use the concepts for good and you can't go wrong.
