We have a number of pregnant moms on the forum right now so I thought I'd have a giveaway for a couple books. The books are "Pregnancy Dos & Don'ts: The Smart Woman's A-Z Pocket Companion for a Safe and Sound Pregnancy" and "The New Parents' Fun Book: Laugh Yourself Silly Through Baby's First Year."

Here's the contest:
What's the most original or useful baby shower gift *you* have received, or have heard of, or hope to receive? Post about it here and I'll draw a winner at random at the end of the day on Friday, Aug. 8.

* You'll be contacted by email if you win and must reply within a week or another winner will be drawn.

I understand the need for a time limit, but in my case, I never received the email that was sent. I checked the email address that was listed in my profile and it was correct, but I was told that an email was sent that I never received. I check my email several times per day (I have to for work).

I'm totally old school so

phoenixgrlkim1's picture

I'm totally old school so I'm going to state the best gift I got with my son who is now 12 and will be 13 when this one is born. I received about 10 packages of cloth diapers and thought to myself, "I'm never EVER going to use these." So I asked my MIL (at the time) if she could get the receipt so I could take them back. She convinced me not to and told me that even though I was going to use disposable ones, cloth diapers made the best burp rags, wash clothes, spit up cleaners and protectors on lay down surfaces for the mat or diaper tables. At first I didn't believe her, but sure enough I was buying more that what was given by the 3rd month in. Cheapest and best gift ever. It will be one of the first "baby" purchases I stock up on this time as well.

As far as "new times" items, I'll be honest, I'll be doing without. Nothing so far has struck my fancy of a must purchase that was existing 12-13 years ago. It still makes me laugh for a mom to tell me she needs a diaper genie and a wipe warmer - plastic shopping bags knotted do the trick as a diaper genie (I always throw mine away ASAP) and I heard the wipes dry out.

Oh and I thought I'd add this. I really, REALLY want a rocking chair with this baby. Totally old school and I don't care.

I loved cloth dipaers for

tonys_mom's picture

I loved cloth dipaers for burp rags and such. I gave what I had left to my friend and told her they work so much better then the thin burp clothes they sale (throw up soaks through those).

I also received cloth

I also received cloth diapers from my cousin where she actually added ribbon along the edges to make them cute and not so plain.

I love the cloth diapers

I love the cloth diapers too!! The packs that I got where very thin and scratchy, but after a few washes softened right up and are SUPER absorbant for those spitup messes!

My favs are the ones they had in the hospital...you know, the ones that "accidentally" made its way into my overnight bag before we left.

Where on earth can you buy those super thick ones from the hospital???

Back in the day, I got them

phoenixgrlkim1's picture

Back in the day, I got them at Toys R Us (this was when Babies r us was barely around), I'd look there. I'm telling you out of everything I got these were the only gift I truly loved. How funny!!! I'm glad i'm not alone. I felt "old" posting this. I will say that since I'm hearing that the "new" stuff is almost worthless I feel better about it too hahahaha!!

Whoo hoo! I'm preggers and love contests!

It's funny b/c some of the things that I swore were the "best" gifts I received with my first, I ended up learning the hard way that they weren't as practical as I thought. May as well have flushed the money down the toilet.

This time, bring on that shower registry!!!! Lessons learned. I am still in the process of researching, but I'm hoping for a great double stroller that will accommodate both a newborn and my (then to be) 15 month son...of course with room for both of them to grow...and not too bulky...with great underneath storage...and it needs to be stylish OF COURSE!!! and! and! and!!!...boy, I've got my work cut out for me!!

I am about 30 weeks along

I am about 30 weeks along with baby number two and this time I am hoping for a great swing and diapers. When I was pregnant with my first son(now 2 1/2) I did not get one diaper at the shower. I did however get the Fisher Price Aquarium cradle swing and it was awesome!!!! My son loved it and it really did work wonders- very soothing and entertaining. I gave it away to another expecting mom thinking that I might not be able to get pregnant again, and about 2-3 weeks later, I found out I was having another sweet baby!!

My favorite shower gift was

My favorite shower gift was my BOB double jogging stroller! It helped me get back into shape after the baby was born and I was able to bring both my little ones with me. They both love riding in this stroller. I use it almost daily and is helping to keep me fit during this pregnancy, too. A great gift for any mom who loves to exercise!

My mother and two best

Rybearsmom's picture

My mother and two best friends threw my shower for me. They sent little inserts with the inviations asking guests to purchase a book in lieu of a card. They asked the guests to write their well-wishes on the inside of the front cover. Their idea was to expand my son's library and have a shower keepsake all in one. It has worked great because I read a book to my son every night and also read the comments that the guests wrote in the books. My son enjoys the stories and I enjoy going back to that very special day when everyone was so kind in welcoming my little angel! I kept the tradition alive for a friend who recently had her shower and she loved the idea as well. The point is to keep it a surprise for the mom-to-be so it is even more special the day of the shower!!!!!

Hi!! My first child is from

cutiebug94's picture

Hi!!
My first child is from China, and I had talked to my friends about how important it was for me-and my husband and I felt for her as well-to have a family portrait done as soon as we got home from China, just to always show her us as a family unit.

At my shower, one of these friends gave us a very nice 8 x 10 picture frame, and a gift card to The Picture People.

I have never seen anyone recive that, and had never thought of doing that before for anyone, but now, that is the gift I give most to new families.

P.S. Just found out a couple weeks ago that I'm pregnant. I'm now 7 weeks. Very exciting and very surprising since I've had so many years of fertility issues!

Thanks,
Julie

CONGRATS MAMA!!! I am 31

CONGRATS MAMA!!! I am 31 weeks along with baby #2! Yay for being preggers. I can sympathize with you, I have had a lot of trouble with my pregnancies (this one has been the easiest, but very uncomfortable mysterious pain). But each journey I would go through it again and again to have my kids. My son is, and this one will be absolute worth every minute of being pregnant. Congrats again!!!

Diaper baby cake!! I made

MOMieOF2's picture

Diaper baby cake!! I made one for my best friend and it turned out to be about the height of a wedding cake and was tons of fun to complete. I ended up purchasing 2 packages of size1 diapers as well as 1 package of newborn, along with rattle, avent baby bottle, grooming kit, colored washcloths/bibs, pink/blue/yellow curling ribbon and sturdy cardboard cake bottom. Rolled the diapers to create the various tiers and attached the additonal items along the side. It was beautiful, and she had something to keep her occupied before the baby came by unwrapping the diapers. =0)

This is cool. Currently I am at the end of my 12th week. YEY!

This will be my second baby. On my ist shower, I had a shower from work and what strucked me was a 4-layer diaper cake, each diaper is folded and tied! This was very helpful on those first few months :) And the best thing about the shower was the 'Surprise', I didn't know the whole thing!

Have a beautiful day!

I got one of those for my baby shower, I thought it was a very cute idea! I am now going to make one for my sister in law and use it as the centerpeice. I'm excited to make it too and can't wait for the out come. The great thing too is diapers are a great gift to get and people never think to buy you that.
