The summer reading program Extra Extra! Read Your Way to the Ball Park! kicks off today, May 27. Many chats have focused on ways to keep your kids academic skills from falling into neverland over the summer, here is one *great* way. Not only does a reading program help them keep their reading skills sharp, it also improves language, writing, interpretive thought, and focus. Plus, if you have younger children, reading for twenty minutes a day is a great way to have some Mommy time and help them earn prizes. Even the very young can participate. By reading, being read to, or listening to books or books on CD, kids progress a space on a game card until they reach milestones to earn prizes, the big payoff being a ticket to a Diamondbacks Game. Check it out at summerreading.azcentral.com, and visit a participating local library today.
Also, Yvette posted some great reading lists under the "tips for mom" link at the top of the page if you need some suggestions to get started.
The program is made possible through partnership with the Arizona Republic, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Public Library and many county libraries.
Susan is mom to Alexander, Isabel, David and stepmom to Eric. Make sure your email address is current, we'll be giving out great prizes DAILY in September after our site makeover! Don't miss out!

This is a great program - I've done it the last three years with my oldest and last year with my youngest who was just barely two but enjoyed sitting on my lap and looking at picture books.

We just picked up our gamecards today at our local library. Not only is the end result a d-backs ticket, there are also little prizes along the way. Very motivational and will help my kids keep reading throughout the summer.
