What books are you reading???

I have just finished Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and looooved it. It's about an old man in a nursing home who flashes back to his days as a "vet" for a traveling circus. Many of my fellow book clubbers didn't like the book or wouldn't even read it because of the way the animals were treated in the book. In the book, the man stays with the circus out of concern and care for the animals so I think my friends have missed the point. However, it was a good, very vividly written story.

What's everyone else reading these days?

I've just started "The Five

ArizonaMoms's picture

I've just started "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman. A friend of mine suggested it. It's more of a self-help book on couples communication. There's a love-language test in the back. My husband and I took it. I knew what my result would be; same for my husband...but reading about how we communicate with each other has been a good refresher. Sometimes it's good to be reminded how we communicate. We've teased about filling each other's "love tank."

I've also bought a copy of Jon Talton's latest mystery book, "Cactus Heart." I haven't started, but plan to soon. I've enjoyed reading his other books, too. In full disclosure, Jon is a friend of mine. I used to sit a desk away from him when he and I both wrote for the Republic's business section.

What's The Book Thief

MollyDonnelly's picture

What's The Book Thief about???

It's in the young adult

Susie's picture

It's in the young adult section - not sure why because it's a wonderful story, well written, some adult themes.
Anyway, it's set in Nazi Germany and the narrator is "death.'' He follows a young girl as she struggles through life as a foster child and steals books as a way of coping with all her tragedies. It sounds like an odd book - but the writing is fantastic and the story is really compelling. My book group gave it very high praise.

I'm going to check it out! Sounds interesting and maybe my book group will like it. Thanks!

My book group just read

azjen43's picture

My book group just read "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. Great, funny, uplifting book!

Next month we're reading "One Hundred Years of Solitude" By Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I read this one in college and remember liking it. I'm looking forward to reading it again. (Better get started soon! :0)

If you're interested in some juicy non-fiction, (that may make you angry) read "Pushed: The Painful Truth about Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care" by Jennifer Block. I think every woman of childbearing age in America should read this book!

We are reading Eat, Pray, Love right now and I am totally loving it! Gilbert's writing is fantastic! She is funny and one author I would LOVE to hang with for a while!

I think we're reading The Emperors Children next. I think I'll recommend your Pushed... book after that. That sounds right up my groups alley! thanks for the recommendation.

I am reading I am America

I am reading I am America (And So Can You!) by Steven Colbert and it is hysterical. I am a bit of Steven Colbert nerd though. If you love his show, you'll love his book too.

I'm reading The Bible.

I'm reading The Bible. Trying to finish it, almost there. It is a great book and quide, it takes a while to develop a longing for it but after a while you can't put it down. I highly recommend for everybody to set a goal to read it completely at least once in their life. It has great love stories, history, battles, wisdom like proverbs, provides hope and inspiration, helps you to develop good qualities like patience, love, joy and other fruits of the spirit. I think there is no better book. And one of my favorites is the sermons of Jesus on Mount Olive. There is nothing more precious than these pearls of wisdom.

I just started "Eat, Pray,

I just started "Eat, Pray, Love" and am totally enjoying it! Gilbert really is a talented writer.

How did you like Eat, Pray,

MollyDonnelly's picture

How did you like Eat, Pray, Love? I Loooooved that book too and found myself chuckling at Gilbert's funny way of writing. I loved her journey to Italy the best; probably because I want to live there someday. The ashram part was so descriptive! I found myself wanting to redo her journeys...if only!!!

I just started reading it.

I just started reading it. It's funny, but it also fits my busy lifestyle...nice short chapters. :)

Well, I've been WAITING to

HopeFaithLove's picture

Well, I've been WAITING to check out "You Can Heal Your Life" by Louise Hay. But the author.book was featured on Oprah and it'll be out for the next few months. *sigh*

I don't want to buy it at the book store, because I read the book once, then it goes on my bookshelf.

Anyone want to do a book trade, that has that book? I have TON of good books, just sitting on my bookshelf. :O)

How's You Can Heal Your Life

MollyDonnelly's picture

How's You Can Heal Your Life going??? I haven't been following Oprah's book Club lately (gasp!) and haven't heard of this book. Let me know what you think.

Have you read The Thirteenth Tale yet? What a great story. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, read the whole thing and then found out I had read the wrong book for book group!!! I am now tediously reading Love in the Time of Cholera... Oprah book? It's starting to grow on me but was a little tough at the beginning.

What other books have you read??? What were you favorite recent reads?

I really like the book!!

HopeFaithLove's picture

I really like the book!! It's not part of Oprah's book club, she just had the author, Louise Hay, on talking about the book and about "spirituality".......how, if you think, feel a certain way (in life), you attract that back to you (in life). I guess it was a book that was written in the 70's and now there are a whole bunch of other book's written on that same concept. Like "The Secret" that was also featured on Oprah's show.

Funny, I took my name off the waiting list, at my library, because I bought the book and after I deleted my name from the waiting list.....I noticed there were 26 people AFTER me waiting to check out that book.

Oprah has such an affect with what books to read, it's amazing.

"You Can Heal Your Life" is a good book and I'm really enjoying reading it!! :O)

I just finished Water for

caret's picture

I just finished Water for Elephants too. I thought it was really good...kind of an eye opener as to how things were done back then. The ending was great. She is very descriptive and did a lot of research to get the time period just right.

I also recently read Eat, Pray, Love and felt that the stories about traveling and her writing were very good. I did think she was a little off in her perception of her found "religion" but overall a good book.

I have both of these books if anyone would want to "trade" for something else. I am always looking for something new to read but my Barnes & Noble spending is ridiculous :-)

I have another book called Been There Done That by Carol Snow about a journalist who takes an undercover assignment at a college to try and break open a prostitution ring. Kind of a funny story.

I am reading Rasputin's

JuneSlager's picture

I am reading Rasputin's Daughter by Robert Alexander. I just finished The Kitchen Boy which is also by Robert Alexander. I have always been fascinated by certain stories in history and the Romanov family and their place in Russian history is one of those subjects that I have always enjoyed reading about. This historical fiction novel is captivating and gives a truly griping look into what it must have been like for the Romanov family in their final days. I highly recommend this easy read.

Great discussion topic - I'm always looking for a good book to read.

I also loved Water for Elephants and Eat,Pray, Love, which I was convinced I would hate, but really enjoyed it.

I am currently reading Pillars of the Earth - it is a big book, so I have been at it for awhile. I almost picked up Arturo Perez-Reverte's latest at the library, but will probably be reading Pillars of the Earth until the end of summer!
