Comics and reading

Comicon is huge - particularly among those we lovingly refer to as geeks. And the Phoenix Comicon takes place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Mesa Convention Center. Kids 10 and younger are free with a paid adult.

And while I really don't know much about comicon, except the crazy storyline I saw on "Entourage," I'm thinking of checking it out this year. The reason it's appealing to me as a mom is that it may ignite a love for reading in my son. At least I hope.

He's a reluctant reader with a couple of learning disabilities. Reading is often a chore. But it's better when he dives into something such as Captain Underpants (which is a comic inside a story) or one of the Disney comics in the monthly magazine, which sadly no longer is being published.

The pictures in comics are enticing, but ultimately, the person who picks up the comic ends up reading the story. And that is so cool.

So I'll tell my son we're going to check out some Super Heroes, and see how it goes from there.

Any reading is good at my house. My son loves science books (capt underpants, too) and my daughter loves the Pony Pals and Barbie series. The key is finding what they like and encouraging them. Forcing books, which I know has to happen with classroom books, doesn't work to promote leisurely reading.

Thanks for the info. my son

Our whole family loves

Our whole family loves comics, my 52-year-old husband still has 3000 of them from 30 years ago...but the comic con may surprise you. The Japanse Manga craze has taken over a large part of the conventions and you may find yourself surrounded by hundreds of teenagers dressed in outlandish costumes and spiked blue hair. I have been to several cons in the last few years with my own teenagers and one has to look between the costumed Manga folks to find the superheroes.

I think this is a wonderful idea to get kids interested in reading for fun. It worked for my kids: from "Superman" to "Man and Superman".
