Cox Communications vs. Direct TV

3XYs's picture

We are having MAJOR problems with Cox and are thinking about switching to Direct TV/Qwest....any opinions would be very much appreciated!!!

Let me give you a quick run down..........

OK, 2 years ago we moved into a new house. Ever since we have had nothing but problems. Cox has our cable run through the attic. When it gets too hot, the internet connection goes out. So usually late in the afternoon I lose my internet. I have to wait for it to cool down. Last summer I had three different techs out, each one tells me something else is wrong. I had one person tell me that the problem was with the cable box and the lines in the street. Another tech told me that when my cable was initially set up, they did it wrong. It goes from the box in the street, to the side of my house, around the house and then back to the front and in through there, up the wall and into the attic.

So far I have had problems with my internet, phone and cable in the past month. Again, problems with internet cutting out. A tech showed up and scheduled somebody else to come out and run new lines through the walls. Another tech showed up and refused to run the lines. He added another power booster. We have 2 now. Last week my phone went out. I was able to make calls out, but nothing could come in. You would get a message saying my service was disconnected. Called Cox and was told that there weren't any outages in my area and they could get a tech out within 2 days. My phone service came back on before they got a tech out. This morning I get up and my DVR is not working. Call Cox....again...and was told my a rep that ever since they changed to On Demand, they have had nothing but problems. He said Cox isn't telling any of their reps what is wrong, just to schedule techs to come out. They had to reboot my system this morning to get my DVR back.

Sorry, just had to vent :)

We have both Qwest and

pvmom's picture

We have both Qwest and DirectTV, and are happy with both. Qwest is fine with us...never had any problems. They have been great whenever I have had to call regarding my bill-they are willing to work with you and a payment plan if necessary. We also bill our Directv through Qwest and save $5-basically get a receiver free (since they charge you a fee for every receiver you have in the house). But the service itself-never had any issues!! And we have had it for 5+ years (in CA and AZ). They have been great when we have moved. Occasionally when we get a pretty big storm through (has to be really big) it'll go in and out for maybe a minute or two (at the most), but it has never gone out for a long period of time.
And right now Directv is offering a special to where you can get $50 back if you are referred from a friend (they also get $50).
My parent's have cox for internet, and it is so slow. I don't get why they don't change to Qwest. I have the internet through Qwest and it's great! Wireless and everything. LOVE IT!!!
Hope that helps.

We changed from Cox cable to

We changed from Cox cable to Directv 7+ years ago. I love it. We never have down time. We just got Cox internet in January and it is so fast compared to the last internet provider we had. Although I would never get their cable again. I have a friend with the Cox bundle and she is having the same problems as you.

I have pretty good service

Lavender_Sea's picture

I have pretty good service with Cox. I was with Qwest a long long time ago, and they always screwed up my bill so bad that I would have to pay the screw up charge and then they would reimburse my bill the next cycle if they did that, but it got so bad that they were screwing it up every other time. I couldn't stand them. They won't fix the bill then and there you have to pay the screw up and then they reimburse you.

We have DirecTV and we love

We have DirecTV and we love it. We had it for years, but when we bought a big screen HDTV for the living room last year DirecTV was not offering local channels in high def. So, we switched to COX digital cable and absolutely hated it. We just went back to DirecTV in April - we bought another HDTV for our bedroom so we got a really good deal on installation and $150 in Costco gift cards. We got boxes for all 3 bedrooms and a dvr in the living room, and we are also getting a discount on the monthly satellite service.
We still have Cox for the phone line and internet and we haven't had any problems with it.

For cable, we've had both

braybee's picture

For cable, we've had both cox and directv...most recently dtv and I'm pretty happy with it. As long as you have a "clear view of the southern sky", it hardly ever goes out.

For our high speed internet, we've only had cox, and I'm really happy with the speed of our connection.

Sounds to me like your connection is so weak because of the extra long line running from the street to your attic. My husband used to install cable way back when, and there is a whole lot of the "passing off/excuse game" when a job is too difficult. Sounds to me that none of these techs want to deal with the hassle of running a line directly from the street to the walls of your house. That booster sounds like another excuse (quick fix) in attempt to shut you up and get the heck out of there.

With the proper lines run, you should be able to have a decent cable/high speed connection. I would get on the phone with a manager or supervisor at cox, explain that you feel like the techs are giving you the runaround and you want the proper lines run (with no rigging or splitters). Give it a try and IF there is no improvement after that, then consider dtv/quest.

Good luck!!

I don't like Cox cable. I am stopping them in the next month. For internet we use Sprint and I have a wireless internet card that I can take anywhere I go. It works very well for us.

We have Cox for everything and have never had a problem (knocking on wood). We do not have the On Demand feature in our area yet.

I bet you just want to scream every time something happens. Is there anyway you can contact a Supervisor or Manager with Cox and tell them everything that has happened? Give them one more chance to get it right maybe?

Good luck.

We have Qwest for everything

We have Qwest for everything too, but we don't see anything but problems - billing problems, cable going out then they charging us $100 just to come check it. If my hubby didn't sign a 2-year agreement for the internet, I'm not too sure I'd still be with Qwest. Our bills are always higher with no real explanation.

There is no way to be a perfect mother, but a million ways to be a good one!
