Hi all,
I really need to know if I am overreacting here. I work strange hours and with the
kids I usually do not have time TV. As a result, I do not have as many TiVo'd shows as I
used to. Now when I get home, I normally just flip around.
First, I stumbled across a show where Moms throw huge parties for young kids. The one I caught had a mom throw a huge $30,000 pirate birthday party for a 3 year old. Who by the way, ended up screaming I hate pirates and boats as he was dragged to his party. I can't understand this behavior however I guess it is like any other hobby. Some people play golf some throw parties. I don't agree with it but it is not abuse. However, I am starting to think TV is out of control when I see a commercial.
The show is called Moment of Truth (sorry not sure what channel) and it is people who take a lie detector test while being asked VERY personal, hurtful and embarrassing questions. In the 30 second ad they showed people being asked questions such as 1) Would you cheat on your spouse if you knew they wouldn't find out, b) Have you every touched a co-worker inappropriately, as their family sits and watches.
I am sorry but I find this very upsetting. I can't believe anyone that is not in dire financial trouble would subject themselves and their family to the pain this will cause. How dare a TV producer think it is OK to take advantage of someone clearly so desperate?
I can't help but wonder what will happen to these families and I am sure kids involved when this is over? What kind of people think it is OK to watch a show like this?
My husband says I am overreacting. It is for ratings. I think people will really be hurt by this.
I can't believe as a society we can watch people being subjected to pain and humiliation for entertainment.
Is this just me or have the TV companies way overstepped the boundaries with this one?

I think reality tv has
I think reality tv has gotten out of control, but so has regular primetime.. No one twists these ppl's arms to go on this show and answer these questions, so I really have no sympathy for them. they are willing to put there ifamily in harms because of money $$, or just for the fame, or even to lie,, shows they have no integrity.. OOPs is that word ppl even know now days?? But what about the show "Lipstick"??, all it is about is immoral sex. have you seen the commercials, it's disquisses me more. Because parents especially will make an excuse for watching it, like "it's not real and it's funny, and it's just a tv show.. YA , a tv show that promotes immoral behavior that is "REALLY" happening in TRUE life.. so, maybe you need to question the motives and you can always turn the channell or turn the OFF buttom and play a game with your kids or read to them, instead of watching all the trash on tv that is really happening in real life. I personnally find "desperate housewifes, grey's and alot of that stuff "trash" and it really does happen.
" just my Opinion"
I understand why you might
I understand why you might be upset about it, but I am looking forward to watching it. I'm a big fan of honesty and am curious about what kind of things people will lie about. I just think it will be fun to watch. Once I watch the show, I could change my mind about it and agree with you.
Differentdrum, I've never seen or even heard of this Lipstick show, but I'm curious what kind of immoral sex they're engaging in. Are they having sex with animals or something? Or are they just unmarried? Or are they (gasp) gay? I'm not coming down on you, I really am just curious what makes it immoral in your opinion.
unmarried, permisicous,
unmarried, permisicous, fornication, homosexuality, adultry, porn, ect..I think you get my point.. and the animal thing, that's just completely gross, sick, mentally ill, ugh..
" just my Opinion"
I agree that some of the
I agree that some of the shows now-a-days are a little ridiculous. I watched part of that show with the mom who threw her kid that pirate party and I changed the station. She was a horrible, horrible mom and wife and I was offended by the way she treated her husband and thought to myself a couple of times, if I was him I would divorce this heinous b-word. I won’t lie though, I can’t wait to see that show “moment of truth.” It looks totally interesting and this show has been many of topic in our house since the previews came out. I don’t think this is offensive at all to the public, but I can see how some might think it crosses a line or is at least in that “gray” area. Some of the questions are racial, weight and gender bias, but it’s also trying to get someone to lie so they lose so they have to be extreme. I have no issues with the truth, but a heavy set girl asking to a guy’s face if “overweight people disgust him” does cause an alarm to go off because you can tell that this guy wants to say yes and knows he’s going to hurt her. The husband cheating question…you know every wife in USA is going to look at her husband with the “look” or “eye” and wonder what his answer would be and if that would make her leave him…

all of them had to audition
all of them had to audition for this so although ppl may look and feel sorry for the overweight girl and others. They made the choice to be on this stupid show. for me, I won't be watching it.
" just my Opinion"
Come on now, shows have been
Come on now, shows have been crossing the line for years and years. what makes this one any different? People audition for the show, they know what to expect and im sure alot of it is edited for "viewer delightment". It has certaintly delighted me, i cant wait to see it.
Personally, I can't even
Personally, I can't even stand the "Funniest" Home Videos show. Less savory talk show hosts have been doing this for years; I never could understand why someone would want to drag his/her personal problems onto a sound stage.
The networks do "reality TV" because it's a cash cow; there are few (if any writers), and the ratings are huge.
Memories I do agree with
Memories I do agree with you. These people sign up knowing what they are getting in to. I feel sorry for some of the questions asked, but I don't feel sorry for the person who has to answer. I too will be totally glued to the set to watch at least the first show!!!
"It's not to late to become who you've always wanted to be..."
Have you ever been in a huge
Have you ever been in a huge traffic jam and thought it must be a huge accident, only to find it is just someone whose been pulled over? It is human nature to see other people's "dirty laundry". Sad, but true.
sure, fine, whatever
I've seen the commercials
I've seen the commercials for "Moment of Truth," and there is absolutely no way I, let alone my kid, will watch that show. I agree that people make the choice to go on and know what they're getting into, but that doesn't mean I have to watch it. Why would I want to watch someone squirm like that or see the pain that their family or friends would go through? I can't even stand to watch The American Idol auditions because I can't take it. I agree with the lady above who said it's like slowing down to look at an accident. I'll have no trouble finding something else to do.

I don't find the "moment of
I don't find the "moment of truth" show appealing, as a matter of fact I think it looks really stupid...............but people auditioned for the show and are aware of what they are getting themselves into, so I don't feel they are being exploited, rather they are exploiting themseleves. I think it's pathetic that they are so desperate to be on television that they would stoop so low, but they made the choice.
There is an overload of reality tv because of the writer's strike.............I don't watch most of the shows........but I will admit to having one guilty pleasure.........I really like watching "The Real Housewives of Orange County" on Bravo.............I know, I know, but for some reason it fascinates me.
I watch American Idol in the beginning when they have the terrible auditions, and I get a chuckle out of it. I think some of them must be entertainers or people looking for acting gigs that the show hires to put on a miserable or wacky performance for entertainment purposes. Like the guy in the silver pantsuit who sang the "brother" song..........no way was that a serious audition. As soon as the auditions are over I lose interest.
I've been waiting for years
I've been waiting for years for Jerry Springer to go off the air and for people to get tired of "enjoying" the poor souls who go on, who do crazy stuff because I'm sure the producers encourage them to, and I am sure they get some kind of payment, but the detriment to their children and their reputation has got to be something that doesn't get factored in until it's too late.
Larry? Jerry?? Povich what's his first name?? His DNA testing shows are the worst, he's getting rich feeding on the insecurities of women, and subjecting them and their children to a public that will no doubt not let either one forget
It's just sad.

My husband went on Sally
My husband went on Sally Jesse long, long ago (with his first wife). She wanted to go, he played along. He said the producers asked for blood. His ex-wife and mother-in-law made up stuff, he played the jerk and laughed about it later. When I watched the tape (from the late 80s), I couldn't believe it...so not my husband. He said producers want you to pretend. Sad what these producers do for ratings.
Let me guess, I'm sure all
Let me guess, I'm sure all of you who are against this show also probably mailed in letters trying to ban the Victoria's Secret ad that was on the mall out in Chandler (or wherever), am I right? It's freedom of speech and a free country - if you don't like it, don't watch it.
that what this post is
that what this post is "freedom of speech".. And no, I have better things to do than right a letter about VS's posters, although I do have the right "Freedom of Speech" to post whether I like something or not..And I realy don't care for some of the posters from VS or Ambercrombie and other stores..

You have a remote control,
You have a remote control, right? Use it. Get over it. TV is never going to change. Nobody is forcing you to watch anything.
Did someone say that Victoria's Secret is offensive??? OMG, say sorry to your husband for me.....

I didn't say you couldn't
I didn't say you couldn't watch it; I just said I wasn't going to watch it. And, just for the record, I love Victoria's Secret.

Prime time isn't Masterpiece
Prime time isn't Masterpiece Theater. And I don't expect it to be. I'm not going to turn on "Reality TV" for my kids, but if they do stumble on it, I turn it into a lesson - mostly of how not to behave.
That said, I have watched some less-than-quality TV known as "reality." Think I Love New York, The Bachelor and Hogan Knows Best. Not on a regular basis, just every now and then. It actually makes me feel better about things that I just thought were terrible. Plus, I find it hilarious that people try to find fame in being stupid. But my door is typically closed so the kids don't see.
I love Victoria Secret, too!
My problem with the show has
My problem with the show has nothing to do with free speech. I am all for free speech and I actually do not have an issue with the other shows mentioned. I do not care for Bachelor or some of the other shows but I see a huge difference between them and Moment. In the previous shows the people going on were only standing to hurt themselves. Sure they make look like fools but it was their choice.
In this case, these people are making a decision which will impact there spouses, families, kids and employers.
How are the kids going to handle not having friends at school because no ones parents wants their kids playing with the dad who touches coworkers. Or the employer who is opened up to a lawsuit for workplace harassment?
I really can't believe anyone who is not mentally ill or truly financially desperate would even consider this. It makes me think of the movie with Demi Moore where she accepted an offer to spend the night with the millionaire to help her family and it ended up tearing them apart.
What are these people going to do to support their families when they can's get a job because of the negative publicity. Right or wrong it is hard to hire someone who admits they are racist or harass coworkers.
Still can't understand it.

Reality TV is not always
Reality TV is not always "all the real", fyi. Producers entice people to say/do certain things that will generate more ratings. At least I SURE HOPE SO, cuz watching THE BACHELOR sure makes me wonder who raised all these women salivating and fighting each other over one man.
Yikes. I would NEVER! Haha. A couple years after college I had a call from one of my college girlfriend's ex ASKING ME OUT! Saw an article I posted or something. I was grossed out! I couldn't even date friend's ex's from YEAR ago, let alone sit around a room with other women telling kiss and tell stories about the same guy. UGH. But hey, that's reality TV for ya.
PS: I too gasped for air when I saw the commercial for that Moment of Truth show. My husband is a reality show junkie so I am sure he will tivo it and I will end up watching it with him.

I find "reality tv" totally
I find "reality tv" totally silly. That said, I don't take anything on those shows to be real. It's people who are trying to find fame, rekindle fame or make a producer happy.
I saw the Scott Baio reality show this weekend...didn't catch my attention, so I'll move on. How much whining can you stand from "Charles (Not) In Charge." Saw the Brady show, too, and it's totally the same sort of stuff from a few years ago. Whine, whine, while.
I'll still check this genre of shows out...Moment of Truth doesn't interest me, though. I'm turning to DVDs now...shows that I never watched and now I can, commercial free.
