Should kids see 'Sex and the City'?

ArizonaMoms's picture

Cynthia Nixon, who plays Miranda, says she's ok with her 11-year-old watching the explicit show. But her daughter hasn't asked to watch yet. Story link here.

How do you guys feel about your kids watching this show? Do you feel differently if they just saw the TBS censored version? When is the "right age" to watch more adult-themed shows?

At this point, I don't let my kids watch anything explicit on TV - be it "Sex and the City" or "Nip/Tuck," both favorites of mine. If I'm watching in my room and they walk in, I shut it off. I'm thinking these shows are really for college students and older because of the subject matter. Am I too conservative about this?

Sheesh! Whatever happened to

Sheesh! Whatever happened to letting kids be kids? 11 is too young for this show --- not just because of the obsession with sex and body parts, but also because who wants their little girl to become a vacuous, shallow, shoe-craving, Cosmo-drinking, man-eating ditz?!?!?!

New to AZ --- still working out the kinks!

No, kids have their whole

jacksmommy's picture

No, kids have their whole lives to watch sexually charged television. I wouldn't dream of letting my young child watch how they make sexual exploits seem "cool!" Now, with that said, since I am lucky enough to be an adult, I can't wait for the movie to come out!

I would have to say no I

I would have to say no I wouldn't allow my 15 yo daughter to watch this movie or the HBO series reruns. I think that the subject matters are way too inappropriate for a teen. I believe some women even 'blush' with some of the subject matter. I do love the show, but don't think it is a wise choice for teens to be watching. I think with all of the programs on TV they are all too explicit with the subjects and scenes in the shows/movies.

No way, no how! I got

No way, no how! I got totally embarrassed the other day watching a movie w/my son and some lady was dancing around, shakin' her chest! I changed the channel immediately - and we were just channel surfing, btw.

No - as a parent, I see no need to rush their exposure to sexually charged material. I, too, am a Nip/Tuck addict and there is no way in this world I'd watch it with any of my kids. (That's defininately a MA-TV show and becomes more so every year ;-))

I am on board with you all here. They will receive enough exposure from their friends, etc., so why add to the pile??

I am disappointed that Cynthia Nixon would be willing to compromise her daughter's innocence at the expense of box office sales.

I wouldn't let an 11-year old watch the show! Some of the material is even a bit much for grown women. I do enjoy the show but with a lot of mature themes, I don't think they're appropriate for children.

I really don't think you're being too conversative, either. If our son wanders in when I'm watching something I don't think he should see, I pause it or change the channel. Luckily, I can record shows I like and I usually watch them after he goes to bed.

I think this actress said

I think this actress said that becausae she is in the show. I would never let my daugther watch this, she rarely watches PG 13 (she is 11) and only after I watched them and decided it was ok for her.

She must be crazy to let an 11 yr old watch the show unless she has very different morals than we do. The show glamorizes sex without implications of disease and pregnancy and without any moral guidance or emotional attachments. I think it is inappropriate for kids.
