My kids were watching Toon Disney today just after getting up from their nap. I had the volume on an average setting. All of a sudden a Vontage commercial came on and it was so loud it scared my daughter and I had to turn the volume way down. We're talking a drastic change in volume here. Does this happen to you? I've noticed it with other commercials (Directv, Progressive Insurance, NetZero) and it drives me crazy. Does anyone know why this happens???
I'd love to write a letter but have no idea who to complain to.

By regulation, TV
By regulation, TV commercials are allowed to be broadcast the same volume as the loudest decible broadcast during the show. Advertisers want to grab your attention, and this is one proven way to do that. So, all it takes is ONE explosion/bang/scream/yell/celebratory shout, during an otherwise "quiet" show to make the commercials loud and annoying!

Soooo annoying. It usually happens to me at night, when I have the tv on with my son is falling asleep in the next room. I have the volume at a barely audible level (but enough for my supermom ears), and then those stupid, loud commercials come on...UGH!!! From that point on, I can never get the volume back to a workable level.
I would love to know why that happens!
I have noticed it,
I have noticed it, too......and it's really annoying. I usually set the sleep timer and fall asleep with the TV on, and sometimes will be jarred awake by a loud commercial.......

Many newer TVs now come with a feature that essentially is "automatic commercial volume adjustment" that does exactly what you'd want (but are now doing manually with the clicker).
It is a nice feature! Certainly worth asking for next time you are at Best Buy or wherever getting a new TV!

Wow, thanks for the information. We just bought new TVs for my daughters. I will check if that feature is available. Thanks again!
There is no way to be a perfect mother, but a million ways to be a good one!

It is annoying. You'll be watching a tv show at a normal volume and then the commercials come on in an extra loud volume.

At first, I thought our son turned the TV volume up. I find it annoying also. I actually prefer to watch shows that I've recorded so that I can just fast forward through the commercials. If I'm watching TV with our son, I mute the commercials. I'll have to look into that feature when we are ready to buy a new TV!

I notice it too and seem to be constantly adjusting the volume during a show to accommodate the actual show and then the commercials ...it's very annoying and almost deafening sometimes!!
