School abduction

ArizonaMoms's picture

The other day a child was taken by his father from a Chandler school. Today, police found the child in Texas. Read story here.

This just makes me think just how important it is to update your emergency contact paperwork with schools and get to know the staff in the front office.

If they know you, they tend to know who picks up and other info.

I know I feel overwhelmed with paperwork at the beginning of the school year. But it can be very helpful in a pinch - such as when you need a friend to pick up your kids. There's also a line on that paperwork, as I recall, of who is NOT allowed to take your kids. This is just as important as who can take them.

I don't know how everything happened at that school. I just know my experiences checking my kids out at my school. And they've been good because I know the office staff.

Our school is also trying out a new ID system when you volunteer in class. The staff scans your drivers license to check against a sex offenders database, and out comes a sticky with your license picture. I'm reminded each time I volunteer how I wish I had taken a better picture, but I'm also glad they are doing this.

I've not had to produce my license when I've picked up my kids early from school. I don't know if that will change, given the news about this abduction. But I think it's better to err on the side of caution when it comes to kids.

I can only imagine the fear

I can only imagine the fear and stress the mother was going through. It is however imperative to have the correct information in your child's school file. If there are any custody issues at all it should be noted on the registration form and the teacher and office staff should know as well. I'm glad the boy was found safe.

Our school is starting an id system as well. They also just started sending out alerts and reminders by prerecorded messages by phone. Usually it just reminders but the last one I recieved was an alert of an attempted kidnapping at the junior high.

Our school went to that

Our school went to that system. The school prints out a photo sticker to wear when you are on campus, but once your license is in the system, they make a permanent ID badge for you to keep. I can no longer get on campus without my ID badge. I can't tell you the number of times that I had to run back out to the car to get my badge in the beginning, Now, I remember, of course.

That's one thing I like

That's one thing I like about my son's school - you are required to submit a list of people authorized to pick up your child....and if you aren't on the list, you aren't allowed to leave with the child.
At the beginning of first grade I inadvertently left my husband's name off the list - and he was not allowed to pick up our son, even though he identified him as his father.
It helps that the school is very small and the staff gets to know who the parents are....and if they don't recognize someone who is behind the gate and not with a known parent they question them.
