I am orginally from Kentucky, and I spent a lot of time living in Ohio when I was little........so I grew up loving Bob Evans....for those of you who have never been it's like a Dennys or IHOP but about 1000 times better.....I saw another post about comfort food and it made me think of biscuits and gravy...........and Bob Evans. I introduced my husband to it a few years back on his first trip to Kentucky, and he fell in love with it. The biscuits are heaven! We go multiple timese every time we are in Ohio or Kentucky. I can honestly say I never have a bad meal there and I would flip my lid if they opened one out here.
What are some places the rest of y'all miss from your hometowns? Every time I go home I also try and hit Skyline Chili and White Castle.......when I'm in Dayton, Ohio where my sister lives it's Cassano's pizza and Esther Price chocolates ( must have buckeyes when in Ohio...they are peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate)...not healthy food but since I only go back once a year or so I say what the hell............

Ooh, my mouth is watering
Ooh, my mouth is watering from your post! Of course NY pizza is tops to me! But I also really love the pizza in Chicago--either thin crust from Pat's or stuffed spinach from Edwardo's and yes, definitely White Castle. I used to crave In & Out Burgers from my visits to CA but thankfully, we now have them in Phoenix. I've heard the chili is different in Ohio--please elaborate! :)
The chili is
The chili is different....Cincinatti chili is sweeter, with a bit of a cinnamon touch....and it is served on top of spaghtetti......usually with kidney beans, a lot of cheddar cheese and diced onions. That's called a three way! My husband didn't really care for it, but it's kind of an acquired taste.
They have it at a few places locally....there is a place called Hail Mary's in Tempe that serves it.....Matt's big breakfast in Phoenix has it....and I think I read that Mickey's hangover has it.
I love In and Out too.....and was happy when they opened in Phx......and I was really happy when the Wienerschnitzel's opened back up here too.....we used to drive down to Tucson for that every now and then!
Wow, that sounds really
Wow, that sounds really good, and really unique. Funny how comfort food means so many different things to different people. I love Matt's Big Breakfast--next time I'm there I'll try their Cincinnati chili. Thanks!
My husband is from the
My husband is from the Toronto area and when we go back we usually hit a restaurant called Gaby's they have the BEST back bacon sandwiches.
For those who don't know what back bacon is it's REAL Canadian bacon (similar to Irish rashers), not that ham (inappropriate term) they put on pizzas and such in the states and it's FANTASTIC!!! I'd go nuts if any restaurants out here started serving back bacon!
It is better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you are not.
I really like Rudy's in El
I really like Rudy's in El Paso. They have brisket, bbq ribs, etc. but Texas style and delicious!
yummymummy - is that also
yummymummy - is that also called fatback sometimes?
I have heard what we refer to as "Canadian Bacon" is really nothing of the sort.
I don't believe so, it does
I don't believe so, it does have some fat on it, but it's not solely fat.
It is better to be hated for what you are, than to be loved for what you are not.
I am from Ohio......Oh
I am from Ohio......Oh skyline....YUMMY!!
That is the first thing I eat when I go back to visit....
then La Rosa's pizza or pasta...the sauce is thick and sweet!
Then late night snack is white castles.....
I normally gain five pounds but Oh well....
Thanks Katy now I want the first plane out of here...here I come Ohio!
My mom is from Datyon....I
My mom is from Datyon....I went to my first years two years of elementary school in Kettering and Centerville.....what part are you from?
I think I have heard of La Rosa's....do they have them in the Dayton area? Or is that a Cincinatti thing? The last time we were in Dayton visiting my sister we were going to order pizza and they were telling me of some other place that was as good as Cassano's......I can't remember the name but maybe that was it.....I forgot to mention Mike Sells potato chips....I am not a chip person but I have to have some whenever I am in town.
I am from Cincinatti. La
I am from Cincinatti. La Rosa's may be a Cincinatti thing. However Krogers sells the sauce.Oh, yes the chips.
When I was there last I ate a whole bag...I know shame on me.I wanted to buy more to take home but I figured they would get destroyed.
My Aunt lives in Datyon.I was actually born in Kentucky though. The famliy OB lived and worked there. So my mom traveled over the bridge to have me.......
When is the last time you were back? And do you miss it there besides the food?
Wow, small world! I am from
Wow, small world! I am from Ashland, Kentucky. We didn't really live there long so most of my childhood was actually in Ohio.
I haven't lived back there since I was in sixth grade, but in the past few years I have been back four times. I have to say since I went back, I do miss more about Ohio than the food. It just felt like home....the green, the slower pace.....I just loved it. What about you? Do you miss it?
If I could talk my husband into it, and I could find a good paying job like the one I have now, I'd move back there in a heartbeat. My sister lives in Beavercreek, right outside of Dayton......I'd love to be back there so I could build more of a relationship with her. She's actually a half sister - my mom gave her up for adoption a few years before she met my dad....and we found each other about two years ago. It has been kind of tough since we are both so busy and live so far apart.
My mom lives in a tiny little town in Kentucky called Prestonsburg - it is in the eastern part not too far from Ashland.....it is real country livin'....... I love visiting Kentucky.............it's a beautiful place, but I can't see myself living there unless it was in Lexington......the area she lives in is gorgeous, right up in the mountains, but the economy is really depressed and people are very poor.....you can see on most people's faces the life around there is hard....not a whole lot going on there.
Yes, yes it is... You and I
Yes, yes it is...
You and I actually have a lot in common.Crazy!
I miss Ohio a bunch......most of my heart is there!
I was there a year ago.I try to go once a year.My whole famliy lives there.Except for my mother who lives in San Diego.
I would pack up today and move back.My husband.....well I haven't sold him yet on that idea! I love the green...the hills....the fire flies.....! You are right the slower pace is wonderful as well.Even though I am from the city....it isn't like Phoenix. We moved here when I was in second grade. However after my father passed away I lived with my Aunt in Ohio for all my teen years.Somehow I found myself back here.I always tell my husband I only came back for you....I never intened to stay....LOL
My son LOVES it there! Would your husband move there since his famliy is here?
well.....I think my husband
well.....I think my husband would consider moving away, but he's already decided if we move somewhere outside of az, it should be to Portland, Oregon or Seattle.........before I met him he lived in Portland for a short time, and he really liked it. he was actually living there with another girlfreind, and he says he just really enjoyed the ares. I don't know how I feel about that, because I have never been there, and I am wary of the connection there. They don't keep in touch, but I wonder if that's the source of the fascination with the whole pacific northwest.
My son got to see some fireflies when we were back home this past June. It had been years since I had seen them...it was really cool.....my mom's house backs up to a little creek and when the sun went down they just filled the air over the water. I remember my dad used to catch some in a jar, and punch a hole in the lid....then blow smoke in there. I guess he thought that was amusing, but I doubt the flies did.
I really get tired of how crowded Phoenix is, and how most people here are so self involved and inconsiderate......everywhere you turn there is someone breathing down your neck. Sometimes when I see people log in and say they are considering a move here, I selfishly want to tell them please don't............it's overcrowded enough here......stay away!
LOL....that is funny! Your
LOL....that is funny!
Your moms house sounds delightful!! I want to go there...ha..ha!
I haven't been to Seattle although I was promised a trip there..maybe in the next 20 years...Oh and Italy but that is a diffrent subject....
My husbands cousin lives there, Seattle and the pic's are wonderful. You really need to make good money there.
I have very good memories collecting fire flies...I found these kits at tuesday morning for collecting fire flies, they were only a couple of bucks.I bought a few for when we go back, just info for you.
As far as your hubby, maybe he had other good memories there and that is why he has the connection there. Although I can understand your thoughts.....
Ranisons (? I can't remember
Ranisons (? I can't remember the name, but the small place tucked into a neighborhood..) and Bridgeman's in La Crosse, WI, and Buckman's, Friendly's or Gelatos in Rochester, NY.
Those ice cream shops remind me of my childhood, before some rather tragic events splintered our family a bit. When I was growing up, we would always go out for ice cream after a good report card or special school event--like a concert or play performance.
ohmygoodness! We just got
ohmygoodness! We just got back from Ohio last night... We had Bob Evans 3 times - and each time, I had the ...shoot.. not the sunrise... its a bisquit w/gravy and an egg and cheese on top. They have THE BEST gravy anywhere! (well, next to my mom's , anyway) :) And right across the street... a Skyline Chili with a White Castle next door! LOL!! You would be in heaven! You need to go to Huber Heights - you can eat all your meals and never leave a one-block radius!
I have to admit - I have no desire to try Skyline, but my FIL goes there with his son and my MIL described the cinammon taste exactly as you did! (I thought she was kidding...)
I was raised in So CA and I make sure to have El Torito whenever I visit.. but other than that, everything that was there is here now. My later years were spent in MA and I miss some of the places in downtown Boston but nothing I even remember the names of...
I think its hysterical that I came across this post tonight... ;D
What about Steak n
What about Steak n Shake?
The only place that comes close is In-and-Out Burger...but I don't think they are nearly as good. Steak n Shake menu is so much bigger.
Besides being fast food with drive through, when you eat in, you get a real plate and real silverware and your drink comes in real glass.
When we are back home in St. Louis or visiting my mother-in-law in Gainesville, FL, we'll go 3-4 times in 5 days! :)
