I don't know if any of you read the Jaime Rose Blog on the Style page of azcentral......I do because I find it somewhat entertaining at time, especially the random comments that people leave and the controversy that ensues. Well - who would have thought that the opening of an overpriced cupcake shop in Scottsdale would create such drama over supporting local establishment vs. chains:

I have never had a cupcake from this place, but I can't imagine that I would be willing to pay $3.25 for one cupcake......honestly, I don't undertstand the hysteria about Krisy Kreme donuts, they have always been too sweet for me...the store out in East Mesa re-opened this week and there were people camped out for days.....that's right, DAYS! For donuts......I don't know what these people do that they have so much time on their hands, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.....back to the cupcake joint...apparently there are quite a few people who were nearly orgasmic over the opening of said establishment:

There are some really brutal comments posted after that article, because of course there were a few overweight women in the picture that appeared next to it, so people had a field day with that.....but I don't get why people get so excited over the opening of places like this. Good grief.

My boss bought some for the
My boss bought some for the office, for a little party for a girl who graduated from college this month. They are really very good, quality cupcakes, not your average duncan hines made-at-home cupcakes. I would not rush out to buy them for anything except a very special occassion for a very special person. I thought they said the store is at the Biltmore area.

i can't see paying that much
i can't see paying that much for a cupcake either.
As for Krispy Kremes - I don't get the craze either. In the past when i have had them, they taste like grease to me. I will stick w/ DD - maybe it's an east coast thing - i don't know.
But honestly, i have a donut about once every three years or so.
just~me
I totally agree about
I totally agree about choosing DD over Krispy Creme. I'm not much of a donut eater either though lol...
As far as these cupcakes go, I saw something on 3 TV this morning about them and thought "wow those look great and are totally different," but for $3.25, I don't know. That's like a 1/4 of the cost for a full cake now a days that you can pick up in the fridge section at Fry's. I might be tempted to do if for my daughter's or son's b-day treat (just 1 for them) but that's about it. Then again, I eat cupcakes like I do donuts, once maybe every 6 months to a year lol.
"It's not to late to become who you've always wanted to be..."
I've never had one of those
I've never had one of those cupcakes either - but my guess is that it is more of a 'trend'. It's the next big thing. Kinda like you had noted Krispy Kreme's ....bagels...coffee...etc. Now, its just cupcakes. I guess I never thought a cupcake would cost that much - however I guess if they plan to stay in business they probably have to charge a little over $3 a cupcake to make a profit. Most interesting.

I love all sweets and
I love all sweets and probably could live off of cupcakes. I am not however rushing over to sprinkles to buy a $3.25 cupcake. I have a few coworkers who have, one went and waited the 45 minutes and purchased cupcakes for her dog too (special doggie cupcakes). I have heard there are not all that special. A dozen of cupcakes run $36! wowsers! I think it a trend too. To each their own.

I'm the odd ball out right
I'm the odd ball out right now. :P
I would go and buy one, just to say I've had one. Who knows, I might actually like them so much that I'd go back and buy more on other days. It's like Starbucks...I would have never said a few years back that I would pay over $4.00 for a cup of coffee, but here I am, buying that $4.00 cup of coffee on those rare occassions.
I can't wait to take a mini road trip and purchase one of these cupcakes to see what all the hype is about!
I think they are counting on
I think they are counting on people like you. :)
I would not go out of my way to sample a $3.25 cupcake, it just would not be that important to me......if they were at some kind of office party, etc, I'd be curious to taste it.....but it is rare for me to induge in fattening goodies.
However - I don't suppose I have any right to point fingers at people for jumping on the latest high priced trend bandwagon.....I prefer Coach purses to Nine West or other cheaper brands , so I suppose that makes me as materialistic and a slave to trends as anyone.....everybody's got their thing, I guess. Even so, I have never driven all the way across town and spend hours in line to get a Coach purse! I guess that's because they are readily available so many places, but the cupcakes aren't.
I actually prefer the coffee at Circle K to Starbucks......maybe that's the hillbilly in me. LOL
Isn't this a chain though?
Isn't this a chain though? They must be doing something right to expand beyond being just the latest trend.
If you really want to try
If you really want to try them without paying the $3.25 price, you can buy the mix at Williams Sonoma(and I think Sprinkles sells a couple mixes on their site as well) and make your own at home!
We drove by Sprinkles last
We drove by Sprinkles last weekend and I couldn't believe the line of people outside waiting to get in. Waiting in line for $3 cupcakes? Sounds crazy to me. I just wish I could come up with an idea like that to make money (maybe a new take on chocolate chip cookies?).

Open up a store that sells
Open up a store that sells cupcakes for dogs only..... people will gladly shell out obscene amounts of money for their pets.
I love Coach as well and
I love Coach as well and thank goodness I have a store right by me at Arrowhead Mall! :)
Slightly off-topic, I find
Slightly off-topic, I find that 60% of the comments on any given azcentral article disgust or discourage me. The juvenile, lewd or racist comments seem to scare away many who have anything reasonable to say on the topic. Who are those idiots and aren't there better forums for them to talk their trash? (And I'm not talking about people who disagree with my way of thinking; I'm talking about people who must work very hard to find a way to make any given issue overtly sexual or racially derogatory.) The comments on your cupcake example are tame compared to others I've seen.

I know - I am suprised that they still allow comments.
They don't anymore on articles involving a death because of the insensitive comments people made.

Gophergirl, I am going to stay off topic with you for just a minute. I completely agree with you. The comments are so harsh did you see the comments about the parents who died on mother's day horrible things were said. Ok, I am done

I've noticed that too! At least they seem to stay there and not invade/overrun places I enjoy reading forums on.
I think I might go try them
I think I might go try them out just to see, its just me and my daugther so it wont be too bad. Perhaps as a special treat for her.

I am picking up my dozen on Thursday. If you order on-line, you don't have to stand in line!!! I'll report back.
I probaby wouldn't go to the trouble but a few friends and neighbors really went over board for me last weekend, and I thought it would be a special way to say thanks.

Are you kidding? For $36
Are you kidding? For $36 I'd rather go to Circle K and get some hostess orange cupcakes (my favorite!), and eat them on my way to spend the rest of the $34.50 on a manicure and pedicure...
But that's just me :-)
Just a report... There was
Just a report... There was no line (Thurs. 11 am), so no line advantage for pre-ordering, put they did have the order ready, already.
The cupcakes are good, and look pretty. But I am not sure they were $36 good and pretty...

Okay....after reading over
Okay....after reading over everyones responses to the Sprinkles hype...I am a little hesitant to let you know I have been twice to Sprinkles!!!
I was the freak who waited in line for almost an hour on Mother's Day to get my Sprinkles!! My husband will never let me live it down! I am a HUGE sweet tooth and have always been curious as to what the big deal was when they were only in LA. I would agree with you on the Coach Purse thing, we all have our vices. I wouldn't spend $600 on a purse....but you give me a sweet little cupcake that Oprah endorses and I AM IN!! :)
So far the vanilla is by far my favorite! The milk chocolate one was disappointing - it tastes like my recipe. I would also have to put in a honorary mention to peanut butter.
So yes I am crazy I spent $3.25 for each little bit of heaven!
nothing wrong with enjoying
