Fruit over cookies?

ArizonaMoms's picture

A USA Today story says fruit is now the most common snack for kids under 6. Coming in second is cookies. In 1987, cookies ranked No. 1.

The survey by NPD Group also notes kids are less likely to drink carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices or eat ice cream, candy and cake as snacks than kids 20 years ago. Full story here.

Seriously? The survey seems amazing to me, given all the news you hear about kids being too fat and how often I hear kids - including mine - beg for cheetos over grapes, cookies over granola bars and juice over milk.

Well, it was self-reported.

Well, it was self-reported. If you asked me to keep a journal of everything my kid ate for two weeks, you can bet it would be a whole lot healthier than what he would normally eat.

They sure didn't survey my kids! Or any of the kids I know!

My daughter will take a cookie if i give it to her, but we eat more fruit then cookies in our house. Come to think of it....we don't even keep cookies in the house. But she gets a treat every now and then with some ice cream. Which she loves.

Plus, i always have fresh fruit on hand. My sister is amazed when her children come over to my house and always ask for the fruit and NOT the cookies. Perhaps they know i don't keep cookies in the house, but they have never asked for cookies.

But i will admit, my daughter likes her goldfish. She gets these as a snack a couple of times a week.

I don't know if the survey

I don't know if the survey was accurate, but I will say that most moms I know are very conscious about what they give their kids. The kids are probably still asking for the cookies, but maybe more moms are saying no and are handing them the fruit. Wouldn't it be nice if we could lower the obsesity rate for this next generation of kids?

Our house of healthy eaters

Our house of healthy eaters is the exception in the neighborhood. I'm skeptical of the "findings" in the report.
