Magic Pill or not?

lovemy4's picture

Alli is on sale this month at Walgreens, and since I'm sending in rebate stuff already, I am wonding about it. I know it has been FDA approved and is said to block up to 1/2 the fat you ingest so it is excreted instead of ingested, saving you lots of fat calories and causing weight loss.

Luckily I do have some fat stored up, so new fat can pass on through and won't be missed, but I worry about other health issues.

I am excercising again and am eating better which is insisted upon if you go with Alli --

Any experience? opinions?? Miss Jan???

Hi...lovemy4..I am thinking

Hi...lovemy4..I am thinking Miss Jan is going to say Nay..on the pills....just a guess...but you never know...ha..ha
I saw a special on diet pills two weeks ago. They said this one you speak of was safe and you are right about blocking the fat. They did say there was a side effect of this pill.If you do eat to much fat that you have loose fatty stools, and often feel as if you have to go.That was the only side effect they spoke off.And of course with any diet...you have to eat right and move...
If you take them let me know.....Okay?

yes i read about this. It

yes i read about this. It can get worse, to the point where, like you said, you get loose stools and then to the point where you cannot hold it in. no cheating on this diet! LOL

Yes, you are right...they

mwheeler's picture

Yes, you are right...they did say that. And yes no cheating.....I am not sure if I could really commit to that......I wonder how much fat you can have in a day.....the program didn't say.....

The problem is that most

Optimist's picture

The problem is that most people's weight gain is from simple carbohydrates. The pill may cause some weight lose initially, but people may unconsciously replace fat calories with simple carbs, as a reaction to the side effects. Isn't this the same as the Olestra that they fried potato chips in a few years back? The chips flew off of the shelves and they quickly died as people found themsleves in the bathroom all day! I've heard that "leakage" may be a side effect. I'd hate to be away from home and have THAT happen! LOL....

Well, it does bring up some

lovemy4's picture

Well, it does bring up some unsavory visuals to say the least!!! But, I did buy it, I will have to wait until after the SuperBowl as I plan to enjoy the cheese balls I have waiting in the fridge and other fat filled stuff.

It might be a perfect way to keep to a diet if you know cheating will cause "leakage" LOL!!! So, starting Monday!!!

Yes, please do wait until

Yes, please do wait until you are done with the superbowl...LOL...
Will you keep me informed? I might try it.....
Good luck!
Oh, by the way does it say anyhting about how much fat you can have?

I doubt that this works - in

Katy1999's picture

I doubt that this works - in my experience the only thing that works is eating less, cutting out junk and exercising more....

I happen to agree with you

mwheeler's picture

I happen to agree with you Katy.......but sometimes it is nice to dream.....LOL

It gives you a set of 4

lovemy4's picture

It gives you a set of 4 books that include how much fat food has, how much you at your height and weight should have, and a low fat, fast food guide. Also one for journaling what you eat, one about the product... Also, you can't start taking the pill unless you've cut down fat already since you don't want to upset the fat you ate yesterday. My Mom wanted to just try one and see what happens, but you can't.

It's been a healthy excercise even just THINKING about what I am eating and how much fat it has. You can't fall off the wagon mid stream without ramifications, so it will be a committment. I bought low fat plain yogurt to replace my cream cheese, sour cream and maynaise for a while...sigh....

So, I haven't started taking Alli yet, but promise to post about it when I do.

Katy, you are right or course, nothing beats diet and excercise, so it's nice those things are step one and 2 on this plan with the pills being a bonus step 3. We'll see...

Hello, lovemy4, From the

MissJan's picture

Hello, lovemy4,

From the Alli website:

"alli works by blocking the absorption of a quarter of the fat in the foods you eat. This undigested fat passes through the body naturally, and it is not harmful. In fact, you may recognize it in the toilet as something that looks like the oil on top of a pizza."

This is of concern because not only is that the grossest statement I've read in a long time, I would question how it can decipher between storage fat and structural fat.

I wouldn't want to eat wild salmon and have its omega-3 fatty acids (oil in fatty fish) swimming around in the toilet.

It sounds like you are definitely on the right track with conscious eating and amping up the exercise. Fat is not the culprit - its processed foods. A bit of butter or milk, etc. nuts, seeds, etc. have amazing nutrients for health and well being.
Portion size is the key. Fill up on fruits and vegetables. I've been dipping my vegetables in pineapple salsa. It is so good!

I remember years ago the magic bullet was a pill called Starch Blocker. One of the major side effects was uncontollable gas. That would be a hoot in line at the grocery store.
