milk dangerous in sippy cups & bottles?

DesertMom's picture

A co-worker of mine said that milk in a plastic cups and bottles is dangerous because the fat in milk pulls the toxins from the plastic so they're in the milk that your child drinks. Has anyone heard about this?

How can that be if all milk is purchased in plastic containers?

There's a very helpful

There's a very helpful article on the Environmental Working Group's website. The article is called "BPA & Bottles," and it gives specific notes on what to watch for and how to care for plastics to keep them safe:

http://www.ewg.org/node/26034

According to the Environment Working Group's website (listed above) polypropylene, glass, and polyethylene bottles (#1, 2, and 4) are considered safe. Also, they state that bottles should not be subjected to high temperatures; instead wash them in the sink with warm water and soap and let them air dry.

I vaguely remember hearing something on the news about this but I'll need to look up some more information. Thanks for the website.

Hmmm...I hadn't heard about

Hmmm...I hadn't heard about that one. I did a quick search on the web and did come across this study. The main concern about milk being dangerous in a sippy cup, is that the cup doesn't keep the milk insulated. Therefore, the milk warms up quickly and can quickly grow bacteria leading to food borne illnesses. The recommended not putting more milk in the cup than your child can drink relatively quickly, and when in doubt, to throw it out. http://www.imperialvalleynews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view...

Personally, I think this is

Personally, I think this is a bubble-wrap issue (as in, some folks seem to believe that it is possible to put kids in bubble-wrap and absolutely guarantee that nothing bad will happen).

This topic captured my interest, so I did a little research. Unless you're buying sippy cups outside the US, it's against the law for your sippy cup to not be "food safe". "Food safe" means that there can only be a neglible chemical interaction between the container and the product in the container. That same criteria exists for milk bottles, milk jugs, and milk cartons. And butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese, cheese and anything else made out of milk or cream in the supermarket. According to my farmer buddies, it's a lot more likely that you'll pick up toxins from buying a hot dog at Home Depot than you will from buying a gallon of milk at Fry's.

First off, your co-worker

First off, your co-worker really needs to do her research before she starts spouting incorrect information and freaking people out.

There are some bottles and sippy cups that do have BPA in them, but the chemical only leaches into the liquid when the bottle/sippy cup has been heated up.

In order to prevent milk from going bad in cups you can either do what a pp stated and only put a small amount of milk in the cup or get one of the insulated sippy cups (Playtex makes Insulator and Insulator Sport cups which are on the safe list).

If you are concerned about what bottles, sippy cups, binkies, and teethers are on the safe list, you can find that information at the following link: www.safemama.com

Whenever I think something sounds too strange to believe I check out www.snopes.com and see if they have confirmed or debunked the rumor. Wonder what it says about this?!?!
