Vitamins

Does anyone give their children vitamins? If yes, when did you start giving them vitamins?

I wont start giving my daughter vitamins without consulting with her pediatrician first, i am just curious when other parents started.

A strictly breast fed baby

busydoingnothing's picture

A strictly breast fed baby should get extra vitamin D. Otherwise, I think we have the world's most expensive pee; we take vitamins that we don't need. Any menstruating female (yes, even your 12-year-old) should also take a vitamin every day to help prevent birth defects in future babies. Everyone else in between probably doesn't need one. Most of us are vitamin D-deficient, though...By the way--are you women getting your 5 servings a day of calcium?!

My kids have been taking

lattemom's picture

My kids have been taking vitamins occasionally since they were about 4 or 5. They've all been pretty good eaters, so I haven't been concerned about them taking vitamins. My daughter loves the chewables from Trader Joe's.

This is interesting, I've never heard that before. Why do you say that most of us are deficient in vitD?

Just a few minutes of sunshine every day and your body can make what it needs. And most milk is vitD fortified.....

2 years old is the start age

2 years old is the start age to give vitamins.

My youngest daughter will eventually have to get on it once she hits 2 years old because she does NOT eat very often....I'll be lucky if she eats a banana for a day...some days she does not eat anything at all....that is part of the why she is on Good Start 2 formula.....

Absolutely drives me insane!

We use JuicePlus gummies for

anneinsurprise's picture

We use JuicePlus gummies for the kids. My 2 year old can chew them fine. They are dehydrated, powdered (not heat-treated) veggies put into a gummy. If you do buy vitamins, get them from a health food store, not the grocery. Vitamins aren't regulated, and the cheap ones are just that -- cheap. Many brands may not dissolve quickly enough for your body to absorb them, and you're just going to have, like the other post says, expensive waste!

It's important to understand why we need supplements.... ideally we'd get all the nutrition we need from our food. But due to poor soil conditions, non-sustainable & non-organic farming methods, our food has substantially fewer nutrients than in the "old days"

Also, our fast food typical American diet is lacking in fresh nutrients. All this affects our body, making our cells unable to repair themselves effectively, and making our immune system weak. So.... the greatest way to get those nutrients is to juice fresh, organic fruits & veggies. But since my kids turn their little noses up at beet juice (which is quite nasty by itself, actually) I do my best to feed them good food, and supplement with the Juice Plus gummies. When they do get sick, they take extra fish oil and vitC.

I think I started my

I think I started my daughter at 3. I give her Flinstones. I tried others, but these are the only ones I could find that she would take.

Hmm.. well I have 5 children

Hmm.. well I have 5 children and my oldest is 10 now and i started her when she was two years old.. all my children love them.. but they will only take the chewable ones. I think it's good to give them vitamins that way they get all the calcium and vitamin d that the wont get from certain foods...

My 8 year old religiously

My 8 year old religiously takes his chewables, my 10 year old refuses. I stopped arguing, neither seems to be healthier. I don't seem to see any difference, but maybe there will be a long term difference in their health??!

My 6 year old has been

My 6 year old has been taking the "gummy" vitamins for years, there are several different name brands. They are the best. She actually brings me the bottle every day to get her one!

I started to give my son the

shawna's picture

I started to give my son the liquid vitamin drops when he was an infant... I want to say around 6-9 months old is when I started them. I think Enfamil makes them, but I am sure there are othesr. My son was born preemie, jaundice, went through RSV, bronchulitis, and tons of respiratory problems. He was constantly sick and the vitamins helped boost his immune system. Since he turned two we give him the chewable kids vitamins from Target. He absolutely loves them and gets excited when he hears that bottle rattle. And even when I'm feeling a cold coming on, I take one of his vitamins because they happen to have way more vitamin C than mine!!

My son started taking liquid

jacksmommy's picture

My son started taking liquid vitamins at 6 months old. He's now 26 months and still takes one everyday. I believe that every living human being needs a multivitamin everyday. Even people who eat well are still not getting everything they need. I really think this helps with a child's immune system and learning capacity when they are growing and can help set your mind at ease when they have a case of toddler tummy without much appetite. My son has only been sick once since he was born. I really believe the vitamins contribute to that....

My oldest daughter started

My oldest daughter started taking chewable vitamins every day when she was around 3 1/2 or 4. I plan on starting to give my youngest daughter vitamins when she's 2 1/2 or 3.

We started vitamins with my son when he was around 3 years old. We checked with his pediatrician and that seemed fine.

My daughter loves her

LaraPiu's picture

My daughter loves her vitamins - she think they are candy.

But I try not to encourage her taking them. I think she should take them occasionally. I think in general that people are taking too many pills and we need to refrain as much as possible.

I prefer to make sure she eats reasonably balanced. I think that's what our bodies are meant to process.

Also when I took nutrition in college the teacher said that we need much less vitamins than you would think with all the products out there.

FWIW, the ones she loves are from Maleluca.
