Cold Meds for Children

me's picture

So, with the latest article on cold meds for children - does anyone have any ideas for helping young ones get thru their colds without using the OTC meds?

My child has only had one cold and she was a few months old and i did not give her any medication, but i always fear that she can't breathe because baby's breathe thru their noses. She is 15 months now and knock on wood....no more colds....but i would like some feedback so i can be prepared should she get one. Anything to help make her feel more comfortable.

My son (2yo) is prone to head colds. Right before bed, I set him on my lap in our encolsed shower, and turn my back to the hot spray (to block it from hitting him). I bring a wash cloth to wipe his suddenly draining nose. Works like a charm to clear his sinuses and helps him sleep peacefully for the night. We usually stay in the shower for 10-15 minutes or so.

Not a medicianl treatment, but a little relief!

I've started doing the following things to help my kids with colds: steamy showers, vaporizer, vapor rub on chest, sleeping upright, nasal saline, and massage. My kids both just got over mild colds and all this stuff did help, more than the medication ever has.

What has worked for us is a

What has worked for us is a humidifier in their bedrooms - run it all night. When my older son (who is 3) is really stuffed up badly I put some vicks (in the liquid form) inside the humidifier (its made for this) and that tends to clear up his nose quickly and throughout the night. For our infant we use the nose sucker to get out the boogies and sometimes use saline (which he absolutely hates!) Keep them hydrated and eating as normal as possible (as sometimes I've heard kids tend to stop eating when they get sick and it makes it worst.) That's really the best one can do...given these new guidelines.

I agree--all these things

I agree--all these things work great. Also, the homeopathic remedy Pulsatilla works great to break up mucus. Check with your doctor, but I've given it to my son as young as 5-6 months with no problems.

I didn't know Pulsatilla

I didn't know Pulsatilla helped w/ mucus. I used it when my son was breech. I doubt a typical doctor knows much about homepathics, though, although there are some really great pediatricians in the valley that are informed.
