My son had a diaper rash recently - it has turn into a yeast infection. His doctor prescribed an antifungal medication but only gave those really small samples they give the doctors offices. He only gave me 2 of them (they are really tiny amounts) and i have to use a lot of the cream in order for the itching to go away. I have a call into the doctor for more - I'd drive to walgreens if he called in a prescription - not a problem. However, does anyone know of a remedy that is over-the-counter for diaper rash/yeast infections? If I could prevent this in the future - that'd be great!

I know back in the day, my son got diaper rash really bad like this (only one time thankfully and it was because of the day care provider which he was quickly exited from). My doctor told me to use an athelete's foot cream and it worked. Honestly though, this was like 11 years ago and I don't know if that's still ok. If you need something ASAP, I would go to a pharmacy and ask while you wait. Just an FYI to prevent (because after this happened with my son I was all about making sure it never did again) my doctor told me to make sure I sponge bathed (wash rag / mild soap) my son a couple of times during the day (after naps and in the morning / afternoon whatever was oppisite of bathing) to clean off anything that might have sat on his skin and after drying, air dry for an additional 10-20 minutes.

I've heard the same about
I've heard the same about athelete's foot cream, that it has the same stuff as yeast infection cream,

Those rashes are NASTY! My
Those rashes are NASTY! My kids have all had them and we used Lotrimin AF the athlete's foot cream as recently as a three years ago. After watching the destruction those rashes cause, I made sure I washed their little butts often!
I would call your
I would call your pediatrician and ask to speak to a nurse. They know all sorts of ways to keep you out of the doctor's office :)
As for other prevention measures, the NICU nurse upon my son's release from the hospital told us to let him run around bottomless for a half hour a day, more if possible. Skin needs to breathe. Of course, now at 2.5yrs, he's out of diapers, but somehow tries to end up naked everyday. Can't keep clothes on the boy.
personally I'd stick with
personally I'd stick with the natural stuff, all that medications gets into the blood stream. you can buy good creams at Sprouts or WHole foods, and also you cornstarch, and I would put these natural creams on my girls bottoms after every diaper change, never had a rash, unless I left them with my husband who didnt change their diapers as often as he should have..All the meds stuff isnt good for their skin..
" just my Opinion"
Try the cornstarch
Try the cornstarch powder......and giving it some air. A bath with a little baking soda in the water helps as well.
My son too got one of those
My son too got one of those killer rashes. Just fill the prescription and get it on the tush as fast as possible. My son's traveled to the front and caused swelling and a lot of pain not to mention the staph infection that was caused on top of the original rash. Give your son the chewable Acidophillis for kids, it is the bacteria found in yorgurt but stronger, I think it is called Primadophilis you can get it at sprouts. This may prevent these types of rashes in the future. Good luck...
Just an anti-fungal cream
Just an anti-fungal cream like the other ladies suggested. and just a thin layer b/c u dont want it to sting.
My son just got a massive
My son just got a massive yeast rash from augmentin and dad not changing him while I was out of town. HORRIBLE!
That new Vusion cream they prescribe works great, but pricey. Without insurance, it's $220+ and with BCBS it was still $65. Crazy.
I did find, before I could get him into the dr, baths with baking soda did help sooth it a little. Diaper off (although it hurt and itched still). I had to let him fall asleep without the diaper and then sneak it on. Cornstarch didn't really work, since his rash was so out of control -- although I do think it works if the rash isn't completely a mess.
I also compared the ingredients to Vusion with Monistat. They both have the same antifungal (in the topical cream Monistat, not the insert). But I am not sure about the dosage.
On the internet it said you could test a yeast rash with yeast infection cream, but I am just not sure if it is too concentrated or not. I think the ingredient is Miconazale. That is also the one in Vusion.
Also, Vusion has zinc and vaseline in it... but about the only thing that helped him was the baths and some Advil at night.
Good luck! :)
Hi Ladies, My daughter (5)
Hi Ladies,
My daughter (5) gets reoccurring "diaper rash" for lack of a better word. It is because she does poorly wiping at school. My mother recommended a formula that her doctor friends all use. 1 part Caneston Cream (similar product for yeast infections) and 4 parts diaper cream (I use: Penaten Daily Clear Protection Cream), if it is really bad I use zinc diaper cream. I use it after baths and at bedtime. A good idea is to use Epsom salts in your child's bath too. Moist wipes work at home but it can be too hard for daycare at an older age or in Kindergarten. I can talk to my daughter about wiping until I am blue in the face and it has not worked, so I am on the "defence" now...LOL!
