My son has flakes on his scalp

littlepatsmommy's picture

My son is 15 weeks old and he has flakes on his scalp. I dont think its cradle cap because its just a small area and its not like scales on his head. Both myself and his dad have dandruff and our son has really oily hair and I dont know what to do? Should I talk to his doctor or should I just wash his hair with something different?? Please help........

It's probably nothing, but

It's probably nothing, but if you feel any concern at all, it can't hurt to ask the doctor.

My son had the same thing, and I didn't think it was cradle cap either. I watched it wasn't getting worse and sure enough it cleared up just fine in a few days.

How often do you wash his hair? It could be dried out. Apparently, babies only need baths every 3-4 days (I had issues with that at first), but cleaning him up with a washcloth everyday is sufficient and much better for their skin.

Hope that helps.

my daughter had a light case

my daughter had a light case of craddle cap on just one spot of her head. So it could still be that.
If you are worried and it just doesnt "look" right call the Dr.

My mother is a RN, so when

My mother is a RN, so when my infant had flakes extremely bad, she told me to apply baby oil. I know it went away in time. But definitely if you are concerned, you can call the doctors office and speak to a triage nurse.

My son had a very, very mild

pvmom's picture

My son had a very, very mild case of cradle cap (according to the dr). And he just recommended using any sort of adult dandruff shampoo-just watch out for their eyes. He was 6mo when I started it, but was around 4mo when I noticed it (forgot to ask the dr at the 4mo check up).
I just got the Head & Shoulders travel size at wal-mart, and I'm still using it 6mo later-and it only cost me about $1!
It cleared it up within about 1mo-but just continued to use it-easier for me, and cheap.

I just read an article about

I just read an article about this and they also recommended getting a mild dandruff shampoo. Should clear up the problem.

My kids had the same thing

My kids had the same thing and it's nothing to be upset or feel bad about. My mom told me just continue to use Johnson’s baby wash and when you wash their hair take the really soft baby brush (you probably got one at your baby shower or hospital) and gently work the brush over the scalp. Then when you take them out of the bath just dab at their head with a towel and then apply a little baby oil and massage it in.
I did this and we never had cradle cap again. Each friend I've told has had the same success. My daughter was pretty hairless so I did it with her till she was 2 and started to really get hair! :)
Also I agree babies don't need a bath everyday. Just in cast that is your routine. I would just wipe him down daily with a wet baby cloth with a little lotion on it for soothing their skin. (even his head would benifit)
Good luck.

PS i know you said your son has oily hair, but this still might work because you are using the brush and that stimulates his scalp.

My son had cradle cap when

shawna's picture

My son had cradle cap when he was really little and I read in a magazine to just shampoo his hair with baby shampoo and while its still in there take one of the baby brushes and gently brush his hair in circles. When I rinsed his hair out, all the flakes had lifted and were gone. I only had to do that once and it never happened again. If I were you, I'd try it and if it still doesn't go away. I'd give the Doc a call. It's probably nothing to worry about though.

My son had problem with

My son had problem with scalp when he was a baby. What I did was putting a baby oil 10 minutes before bath. It was helpful.

One thing I am sure, babies will outgrow this.

Have a beautiful day!

Sounds like cradle cap to

mom2threegrlz's picture

Sounds like cradle cap to me. We are all giving you tweaked versions of the same remedy. :) Here's mine: Put a little olive oil (the kind you cook with) on the scalp and gently "scrub" it with a very soft baby brush. Do this right before bath time and wash hair as usual. I personally like olive oil better than baby oil because baby oil can be very harmful if breathed in or ingested. You could probably use vegetable or canola oil too. You can wash the brush with baby shampoo and the oil will come right out.

My pediatrician recommended dandruff shampoo too, but I don't like the idea of using those chemicals on an infant.

I have pretty much the same

NSMom's picture

I have pretty much the same advice. The trick is getting under control now, and then preventing it. Apply a little baby oil, and then I used the special comb the hospital sent us new moms home with specifically for this to loosen the scales/flakes. Only leave the oil on the scalp for about 30 minutes and then wash out with baby shampoo. Don't leave it in -it will make it worse. Or, the other option is the dandruff shampoo. But, as a previous poster said, be very careful not to let it get in his eyes.

After you have it under control (doesn't sound bad anyway), wash his hair with baby shampoo daily or evey other day until that newborn oiliness goes away/ or you find the right timing to keep it away.

My daughter never had it bad, but I got right on it when I saw the first flakes.

Nothing got rid of this on

ryzagaja's picture

Nothing got rid of this on my kids, it was frustrating (and looked gross) I remember thinking, I must have been doing something wrong, but it eventually goes away, just wash it the best you can, I did use a gentle brush, which really didn't help much and seemed to brush away most of their hair rather than the flakes!

I think it is more of a genetic thing, my older two had it, my younger two didn't (different dads)
