Did anyone read the article today in The Arizona Republic about neti pots? It's a device used in India to alleviate sinus problems - colds, allergies, etc. Basically, it's a pot that you use (with a saline solution) to rinse out your sinuses. My sister-in-law uses it on her kids (for bad allergies) and she swears by it. I was a little hesitant to try it out until reading the story today. Has anyone had an experience with the neti pot?

Neti pots are awesome. I
Neti pots are awesome. I used it after I heard about it on oprah.
Everyone has told me that
Everyone has told me that it's the best thing ever invented!!!
My son is 4, has horrible allergies and he won't even let me use saline drops in his nose, how am I supposed to use the Neti pot? Any suggestions?
I have suffered from
I have suffered from allergies for years and was always getting sinus infections. I have been using the Neti pot for over a year now and I love it!
I've been curious, but
I've been curious, but nervous.
Is it comfortable to have the liquid stream through like that? I was worried it might feel like drowning. I have friends that use them, but it's not really the kind of thing you can ask to borrow!
I was nervous at first as
I was nervous at first as well and it took a little while for me to get used to it. The more you do it, the easier it gets. It is just salt water so it is not harmful. It is just like going swimming in the ocean and getting water in your nose.
My first advice would be
My first advice would be make sure you're positioned correctly; you have to hold your head just so, or it either doesn't work at all, or goes very slowly. Second, read the instructions! It burned the first time I did it, and then I read the instructions (I know, I know!); apparently you're only supposed to use half a packet of solution until you get used to it. If you do it right, nothing goes into your throat; you breathe through your mouth (instructions actually remind you to breathe), tilt your head, pour in one side and it comes out the other.
I've always had allergies
I've always had allergies that we've been unsucessful at controlling with meds; one or two sinus infections each year have always been par for the course (not to mention the inability to breathe "100%" everyday of the year). Then this past year, I suffered 8 sinus infections! After consulting with an ENT and having a CT scan to make sure there wasn't a problem, it was chalked up to allergies. Soooo....my Mom recommended a neti pot after seeing it on Oprah. I bought one a couple of weeks ago, though haven't been very good about using it daily. I CAN tell you that on the nights I remember to use it, I breathe so much better during the night. Not really noticing a difference during the day, but that could be because I'm not using it regularly. They're not terribly expensive (I got mine on sale at Fry's pharmacy for around $10, and that included something like 30 or 40 packets of the saline mix); I'd say give it a try!
I have terrible allergies
I have terrible allergies and I haven't taken claritin since becoming pregnant (used to take one a day)....is the neti pot safe during pregancy?

I'd call your OB's office
I'd call your OB's office just to verify, but honestly, I can't see why it wouldn't be safe--it's just saline (baking soda and salt, I believe), and it goes in one nostril and out the other; I don't think much, if any, would get in your system.
I was getting sick and a
I was getting sick and a teacher at my kids school swears by neti pots and told me I had to try one. They really are great, but it takes a bit to get the hang of it.
sure, fine, whatever
I saw Dr. Oz on Oprah talk
I saw Dr. Oz on Oprah talk about these and have wanted one since. I use to use a squeeze bottle, but the neti pot seems like a lot better. The Doctor said you are just washing out your sinus so it can do it's job without being all stuffed up. They had several in the audience who swear by them. Worth the try!!

Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to take the "plunge" and buy a neti pot this weekend. Alright, I'm still a teeny bit nervous...
