Ulcers and College students

just2nomore's picture

My niece is freshman at ASU, and has twiced suffered severe upper stomach pain. The first time was over Christmas break and they took her into Urgent Care, were they told her she probably had an Ulcer, but really didn't do anything for her. She also did a stool test, but nothing showed up and her doctor said it was probably because the Nexium she takes for acid reflex interferes with that test, so she went off it and was suppose to do another stool test, but because of her busy schedule (18 credit hours and working 2 pt jobs to try to pay off school and take out no loans) she forgot to do the other test. Just last week my sister had to take her into the ER for severe stomach pains again and she also freaked out and hyperventelated (spl?). The blood work turned out normal and they didn't see anything on the ultrasound results so the ER doctor told her that she most likely has Gastritis or a Peptic Ulcer, but she needs to do her stool test to determine if she has H-pyroli bacteria that causes ulcers and then the stress from school makes it worse. She has an appt. with the GI doc, but not for 3 weeks. My sister in the mean time is having her drink cabbage juice (yuk) and probotic acidolpholis.
Any one have experience with Ulcers and such or been stressed from school that you've had severe stomach pains. Thanks for any input.

DD got a peptic ulcer when

DD got a peptic ulcer when she was about 5. From what I remember, it's caused by a bacteria. The pediatrician diagnosed it just from her symptoms. She took antibiotics and was fine afterward. DD's symptom was stomach pain at night. I also knew an adult that got one from swallowing Salt River water.

I am sorry to hear this.

I had it right after college. My doctor, who at the time was at Mayo Clinic, said that it's either the bacteria you mentioned or genetics. Mine was genetics and as it turned out my father had them at exactly the same age.

They were so horrible I was on the floor doubled over in pain when I had them. Deep breathing was the only thing that really helped. The good news is it went away eventually. Good luck.

I had almost this same thing

I had almost this same thing you are describing when I was first out of high school and newly in college. I had the whole stomach pain and several x-rays and ultra sounds of my abdomen that revealed nothing. I never did have a stool sample test done. However, they chalked it up to gastronitis. They did recommend a papaya enzyme that can be found in natural food stores like sprouts, whole foods, and those type of stores. It 's suppose to aid in digestion. I tried it for a while and can't remember whether it worked for me, becuase it was so long ago. I know that the acidopholis is suppose to have the good bacteria in it so it's suppose to be good for you. What about looking for some other natural remedies, such as tinctures, or other natural herbs that may help. Good luck ... I remember this wasn't fun!!
